Hi there,

Just a little bit of advice needed please!

My 6 year old ISH has always had soft feet, I started him on a course of Keratex hoof hardener back in April and adding a biotin supplement into his diet ever since.

Fast forward into summer time, massive improvement.

Now because the ground is frozen one week then mushy and wet the next his feet are getting bad again resulting in a lost shoe this morning.
I'm going to try another weeks course of Keratex and see how we get on.

Has anyone tried Cornucrescine daily hoof barrier?

Or recommend something else that I can be doing to help? :)

Having same issue with our QH. Got our vet to take a look at his feet to make sure nothing untoward was going on. He recommended the same - Keratin hoof hardener etc. Also over reach boots as the mud/slush is slowing the break over of the foot down and he reckons that is why the shoes are being lost.

Farrier said a shavings bed is good for helping to dry out the feet.

Has he got any lurking thrush or white line disease.

Diet makes a huge difference. Want sufficient zinc, copper, magnesium, biotin, methionine, lysine etc.

Had similar issues used formula for feet worked fab on previous horse not such good result with new horse. So moved to keretex feed supplement a few months ago and getting fab result ie two shoeing no lost shoes. Mine stabled on pellets so been using Keratex Nail Hole Damage Repair and some effol winter hoof gel. Just to ensure feet are clean ie no urine soaking into feet from bedding. Also scrub with hibby scrub. I think you might be better switching to a good quality feed supplement for feet rather than just biotin. As your probably needing to improve quality of horn and might need more help than biotin alone

Ive similar problems too :( Hinds arent too bad but his fronts hardly grow and if he loses a shoe then he really struggles and his hoof just crumbles. I find his clenches come up after about 4 weeks and then Im keeping everything crossed that he keeps them on til the farrier comes. Ive been using Kevin Bacons, biotin and a good balancer and during Summer I did see an improvement. Farrier has suggested Formula for feet and it came today, so fingers crossed. Out of interest does anyone know if I could drop the balancer now as the FFF seems to be full of vitamins etc so wondering if its daft to feed both as its so expensive!

Yes you can drop balancer if using formula for feet. I used it for a number of years for my previous horse and got great results def notice diff if took him off it. New horse not such good results so switched see above. Need to give a few months to see if working so worth getting the big bag

My mare feet were like this at our old yard - she'd be lucky to keep a shoe on for a week and they were horribly crumbly.

The only thing that made a small difference was adding Equine America Hoof Power Plus to her feed. Her feet have improved beyond recognition now she's at a different yard where it's completely mud-free.
