I switched farriers this week; after my previous chap let me down several times last month. I have used the 'new' farrier for my other horses in the past and really like the job he does.

I am so embarrassed....

My filly was shod Monday morning with a neat pair of hot fitted front shoes. Her first set of hot shoes, as the previous farrier cold shod. Tuesday afternoon she came in from a day in her paddock minus the o/s front shoe. I called the farrier and he came out this morning and re-fitted it. Now... this evening the n/s front shoe is off.

Another farrier happened to be seeing to the horse stabled opposite mine and must have heard me muttering darkly to my filly..... He took a look at her feet and checked the shoeing, and said they were all fine. He dismissed the idea that the filly was pulling the fronts off with her hind feet (as I'd supposed), because he said she wasn't shod behind. He just shrugged and said call the farrier out to re-fit it.

Thing is.... how many times in one week is a farrier going to want to hear that my horse has lost a shoe? It's worse because he knows I've just switched to him. He'll probably think mine's a problem horse and wish he'd not agreed to take her on.....

My horse lost a shoe this week, was the first time for me but my friend has lost 3 this winter

It takes a bit of time for farreir to get to know your horse so im sure he won't think that at all

A horse can definitely still pull its front shoes off even if not shod behind.

New horses to a farrier can go through a bit of shoe pulling initially as we dont know the horse yet.

I am sure the farrier thinks none the less of your horse over this.

I am normally blamed for shoes coming off... even though thats not really the case so your view is refreshing to say the least

here are some common shoe loss reasons:

I offer you sympathy. Mine were done 3 weeks ago. 2nd day the TB lost his front right shoe in the field, had it put back on. A few days after that he got an abcess in the left hind so vet had to remove shoe, queue another visit from farrier to replace when he was ready. 2 days after that, yanked the front right off again hooning around in the field. And then for good measure my other one lost a hind shoe. Waiting for refitting again.

Turning out to be a very expensive at the minute!.

Just the luck of the draw with my 2 at the minute. My farrier is excellent, it is just my 2 are being idiots in the field and the mud is really not helping.

Mine, still tied up, stood on his shoe and pulled it clean off, the very minute the farrier had packed up and driven off the yard!

Naturally he didn't answer his phone, cos he was driving!!
He replaced said shoe about 3 days later, only for horsey to pull it off the next day, and take most of the hoof with it. Cue stick on shoe(at vast expense) cos horsey has cr*p feet anyway, and wrecked the bit of growth he had! Stick ons only last about 2 weeks, so cue yet another visit and more glue on plastic!

Many thanks. I expect it's the 'mud' reason. She does gallop about, and pace up and down by the muddy front of the field when her field companions are brought in. Guess that's the problem of sharing a field with lots of other liveries who keep to different schedules
