I've owned horses, always more than one and for the majority of the time shod all round and have, over thirty years of daily riding and regular turnout had less than ten (I swear) shoes come off. Five were pulled off in the field, my pony pulled two off in sheep netting (not included in the previous five - he was a little beggar) one during XC practise and one was pulled off by a horse getting too close. ALL were fronts except this last one.

Every pulled shoe was a clean pull and no hoof damage occurred. How does everyone else fare? My horses and ponies are as busy as the next and we compete and train, hack and go on the beach and XC regularly.

They all have good hard feet, a few of which are white feet.

Amy May lost one shoe in the many years I had her.

Thumper would pull a front off every week when I first had him. Things are hugely improved now though. The last time he lost a shoe was a fortnight ago - a hind one. Looks like he clean stepped out of it.

Mare I have now is only shod in front and has pulled one off once, the Great British summer was to blame for that one

Previous to that, I had a TBx, with typical TB feet. He lost shoes, mostly fronts with depressing regularity

. Without a shoe on, he acted like he was missing a lower limb, so farrier was required asap to bang it back on.

My friend has a TB and he has him shod every 4 weeks, if they stay on that long

. He is forever losing them in any/every situation, he is the farriers best friend

When I first had Lady she used to lose shoes the whole time as her feet were poor.

In the last ten years she's probably lost a handful by messing around in the field.

Fudge has lost four in the four years I've had him.

If I had another horse that lost shoes, I'd speak to my farrier to see if more frequent shoeing or a different type of shoe might help, then look at his/her diet, try a supplement such as Farriers Forumula and maybe a topical solution to prevent the hoof wall getting to wet or dry.

I'm always amazed at the amount of people who have their horses shod only when they loose a shoe or when the clenches have risen etc.

Only six horses out of the fifteen on are yard are shod every five to eight weeks the rest go ten or more weeks between shoeing. And there owners moan if their shoes wear thin or they fall off.

My friend's horse used to lose a shoe within a week of being shod, it was a nightmare

that said, I think the farrier might have had something to do with it, as they didn't have deep mud, were in light work and had good feet.

My old share horse used to lose shoes but only because she was left far too long between shoeing IMO.

2 lost shoes in 2 and a half years.
The first time was when my yard insisted she was dangerous and had to have part of the field fenced off, so she was on individual turnout. She then paced all the way up and down the electric fencing. (This was mid winter) She created this deep muddy track and literally sucked one of her back shoes off.
Last time she lost a shoe was a year ago during a dry spell in the summer.
Farrier has always been fab at coming out the same day or the next day to stick one on the naked foot

Frank once in 4 years, cross country schooling going down some steps, even though his feet are actually not that good.

Mare, has prob 5 or 6 off a year, normally because her brain forgets where her feet are, she will have them off in trailer (now wears over reach all round), field messing about, latest was warming up for a comp, normally in the 5th week of shoeing

We are shod every 6 weeks

Since May Genie has been losing one a week, alternating her front feet only, even when turned out with overreach boots on. I have changed farrier just to see if there's been a difference, and touch wood she's yet to lose one! (Watch as I get to the yard to find her shoeless today)
