So after the allergy to grass and laminitis Patrick has now decided to come out in lumps all over his body. Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh what else can this pony do? I have tried to convince myself they are heat lumps and have downgraded all his rugs but its not making a difference at the moment. The only thing I have changed is adding Alfa A Oil to his diet but I really can't see that causing lumps I have however cut it back out again - anyone else got any ideas please?

o'h no lots o hugs, physio told me today I still cant ride. I would be tempted to cut it out and go back to what you had before so you can rule it out? and she if its just the weather or the feed

Oh poor you - are you still really sore?
He is now back on his original feed but I just don't understand whats in Alfa A Oil to cause lumps and bumps.

Oh dear

Poor P.

Sure is nothing serious though.

When i bought Finn he was covered in massive weeping lumps.

He was allergic to something, god knows what. You can imagine what people thought when i brought him home!

afraid so, still doing physio every 48 hrs.

Its amazing whats actually in feed, if you want a chaff with virtually nothing in it, try thorogoods special chaff (has probiotics in it too)

Poor Finn - how is he?
P's are just lumps, look a bit like nettle rash but he has had a rug on and no nettles in the field.
Sadly for him it hasn't stopped me working him, he is going to have to come up with something better than that to get out of work!

Sounds like good approach, to me.

He's fine. Little turd got his muzzle off in field today. Git. Am going to super glue it to his head until the summer.

pmsl - he is so not going to like you!

Bloss sometimes comes up in loads of lumps. Had the vet out once and she just said that its a reaction to fly bites or something in the field. Bloss is really sensitive due to her pollen allergy and if she gets bitten by anything she gets lumps all over her body

Cure is 2 bute in tea and 2bute for breakfast and the lumps are gone by the following afternoon.

He doesn't like me anyway

True! Although he does find Twiglet's arm tasty!

He was definitely in a good mood after that.

Thank you Tempi that is interesting, Bloss and Patrick seem to share many problems. I think I have some bute still so may be worth a go.

It could still be heat lumps. Gen is full clipped and in a light weight rug and still has heat lumps. They take a while to go down if they get them - about 2 weeks on Gen. Also if he gets hot again ie working he gets them all over again. He has SUPER sensitive skin and it can be a bit of a nightmare.

He has them at the mo and is all itchy poor boy. I cant really say what you can do to get rid of them as so far ive not found anything - advice would also be welcome here

Mister too got some lumps recently...thought it may be me washing rugs etc.....but they were done a while back.....dont dispair...it can be any type of allergy and hope will disappear soon, when they can air themselves and not be rugged up all the time!!!

Actually I thought about this and its Alfalfa that Gen is allergic too. Made him lumpy AND gave him the terrible runs. He gets Readigrass now instead and is fine.

I have heard of horses being allergic to alfa a but Patrick has been on Luciebix for 4 months and that is just alfa a, so the only thing that is different is the oil.

Thanks Mat I'll give this a go I think, thinking about it it is most likely to be something in the field as this is his 1st week of being out all day, previously he was only out a couple of hours a day.

Id try the Bute thing for Gen as well but he's competing tomoz (eek!) and so I cant.

Might try it next week.

Jo C - let me know how you get on. So frustrating isnt it?

What happened with his grass allergy? Was it treated? My Welshie itched for years, I always thought it was SI until finally he burst out in lumps all over his neck and shoulders last year! We had him allergy tested - grass, dustmites and hay moulds! He's on a 6 month vaccine course as we speak and fingers crossed, so far so good.

If I were you Id have him tested asap.

Bute always helped my lot in the past for lumps like that, you can also treat them with a medicine ball, but this is very old fashioned (not sure if it is legal) and I would only be happy for an experienced horseman to administer them.

Just be careful it's not Urticaria

It's quite nasty but I wouldn't say it was lumps but wheals (sp?) almost like when you scratch your skin and the mark comes up? Plus at some point on the wheal it will erupt and there will be a scab

However it could simply be where he has sweated and his skin pores are blocked with grease?

He has been fully tested and the main things he is allergic to are rye grass, sorrell grass and cockroaches! I haven't gone down the vaccine route as quite frankly the insurance refused to pay out and I have a £1k vet bill to pay so I simply can't afford it. I promise you I don't have cockroahes in my stable either!
grin.gif
Can I ask how much the vaccines are if you don't mind?

Edited to add he has not had problems with lumps like this before, his allergy took the form of respiratory problems these were treated with steroids but unfortunately caused laminitis.

Alfa oil is high in Soya and many horses are allergic to it!

Is it just Alfa oil that has the soya or all the Dengie Alfas?
Just to let everyone know I gave him 1 bute this morning and the lumps had all disappeared by this afternoon, thanks guys!

Edited cos my spelling was appalling

You are quite right it is indeed, the lumps have gone down and he has been off the Alfa oil for 3 days so I am going to reintroduce it and see what happens, if they come back up it is definitely caused by the feed. Thanks for your help.
