I ask because my boy came back from his loan home last week fat as a hatter (House...whatever!) and I am riding him everyday sometimes twice a day and he has already gone up 1 girth strap hole. Is this losing too much too soon? He is out most of the day, with grass, has his haynet and 2 small hard feeds. He is looking better and it helps his hairy mammoth coat is coming off now too. I am thinking, weight loss has got to be better than contracting laminitis surely but just checking your thoughts. Out onto summer grazing shortly (there lies another dietary challenge!).

No, sounds good to me. I'd expect him to go up to holes quite quickly if being managed correctly.

Well done.

no i would say that is ok, especially coming into spring you really do not want them too fat! just make sure though that once you have him at a nice wieght that you can maintain it and he doesnt keep losing!!

Going on daughters Welshie, I'd say judging by what's floating about the field, on our clothes, in the car etc the loss of hair has conbtributed to one girth hole on it's own - and your lad is a lot bigger so has more hair to loose. Agree it's better to loose weight now than go onto summer grazing too fat
