my horse went barefoot 12 weeks ago but went lame coming off trailer to new yard in between and when I say lame hopping however first vet couldn't diagnose lameness and recommended box rest 7 days and bute twice a day however by day five horse becoming dangerous in stable (despite acp daily) so in a panic got second opinion second vet couldn't tell where horse was lame again but approved turnout (which is what horse wanted) so turned out for two months, appeared sound so bought back into work no probs until last Monday when obviously lame (nodding head) so been on box rest since (all other horses in so horse not reacted badly) Have noticed foul smell coming from left front hoof so treated all four hooves for thrush- horse not happy about having hindlegs picked up- she will but not happy but a soft lump appeared on front right- like a windgall... not sure where to go from here... any advice and any recommendations for horse vets in north east

Shoe the horse.

Your current problems are probably nothing to do with barefoot but you don't sound as if you are in a good position to make it work for you.

Sounds like a horse on my yard, similar situation, barefoot, lame, small fleshly lump, windgall like. After seeing many different vets and having scans and x rays it concludes the horse has a fracture just above its fetlock joint caused by a nock possibly off the other leg. The fracture will heal eventually and the lady has been told to ride the horse in walk for an hour a day.
