Losing your temper.

good question welsh dragon. I think you'll be fine in your horse owning venture if you always ask 'why'!! Theres awlays a reason horses do things even if it takes a while to find it. Pony probably felt perfectly happy and safe where it was and therefore didnt want to leave that situation.

Okay........... I have read everything .... will just say one thing, if this had been posted by someone else they probably would have got jumped on

I thought that too.

For what its worth, I have no problem with what Henryhorn did - we are all only human, and horses can be so damned stubborn sometimes - especially cantankerous oldies; an occasional loss of temper is inevitable for most. But..........had this been posted by anyone else, they would have been lambasted for cruelty, and possibly even told that, with a temper as bad as that, they should not be allowed to keep a horse!

The people on this forum are fickle, and as such, many opinions given no longer hold much weight with me

Naughty Charlie!

I can honestly say I have never beaten a horse with a whip or lost my temper to a massive degree other than socking a certain horse in the gob when riding if it was being an arse as it was the only way to get it onside

I once had to get on a horse after she was beaten by a girl because she had misbehaved SJing - she had taken it back to the warm up ring and beaten her and then put her in the stable where the groom found her cowering in a corner with marks all over her

I had to take her back in to give her a confidence boost but it taught me at an early age that punishing a horse after the act is pointless and simply confusing for the horse at that time.

In HHs case I would prob have gotten the headcollar on and then given him some VERY choice language and made him come in at my, probably rather fast, pace

However in these circumstances who knows HOW you will react unless you are doing it.

I think practically we all know that losing your temper won't help but when it happens you're not thinking logically!

I've never beaten a horse because of losing my temper, and it doesn't happen often but there's been a couple of times I've got really angry and walloped or yanked said horse when its not necessarily going to help. Once my old horse Taz bit me when I was rugging him up and I really shouted at him and chased him round the stable with a plastic shavings fork - didn't hit him, but mind you he didn't do it again!

These days if I feel myself starting to lose my temper I tend to take a deep breath and do something different for a while.
