Hi my horse went to the vet's a week ago and within 3 days has gone off his food - only eating half his hay and 3 or 3 mouthfuls of shortfeed. He is normally a complete piggy and never leaves anything! I did notice that he was blowing his nose every few minutes 3 or 4 days after visiting the vet. He has no temperature, no cough, no snotty nose but he is a little quieter than usual - but still quite bright. I am reluctant to call the vet because there are no symptoms. Do you think he's picked up a virus at the vet's?

he could have! sounds similar to a virus that went round my yard last year! Id just keep an eye and ring the vet for advise if you worried!

Treat as for viral infection - keep him quiet and feed appetizing bits in tiny feeds of nutritious things. If not recovered in a couple of days a phone call to your vet is in order. He hasn't got mild strangles, has he?

Why did he have to go to the vets in the first place joanie? Could it be linked? If you're at all worried, call the vets anyway as they may be able to throw some light on it. There ARE symptoms lol! You described them perfectly in your post! Off his feed, blowing through his nose and quieter than normal!

Whereabouts are you?
There is a very nasty virus going round the gloucestershire / Warwickshire area, but does generally lead to a slightly snotty nose.

The only way to be sure is to get the vet in an do blood tests.

The other thing it could be is migration of the encysted redworm, so you could do a course of panacur guard to see if that perks them up.

feed him little and often put some mint in his food coz that will often help there appiette. put him on a course of enchineca so if he has picked up a little bug this will help him fight it off. keep him nice and warm give it a week and see how he goes if he gets better well thats good if he goes worse call the vet!
