I am sadly having to have my companion pony PTS tomorrow. Although I have another pony lined up, logistically I cannot get it until after the current pony has gone.

Any ideas on how to keep my horse sane during the change over?

Sorry about that but can I just ask you to leave your pony with the body for a while so it understands properly that the pony has died, not just gone and left it if that makes sense.
It is far better for their healing/grieving processes to be able to accept if they have been able to look and sniff at the body until they are no longer interested if at all possible.
Perhaps in the meantime you could collect the new pony and bring it back before the body is moved so that pony is not left alone if that is what you're worried about?

I did exactly that when we had our old companion pony PTS. She was PTS in the field, with the others in a separate area. They seemed to know and understand far better than if I'd just taken her away. They weren't upset about it at all, and only called a couple of times after she was taken away.

The old pony is being PTS because he is blind and is not coping to the point of becoming dangerous. I do not want to bring the new pony in while he is still alive as this will confuse and upset him and I want him to go as peacefully as possible.

Thanks for your comments, we will try and let him see the body before it goes.

Thanks for your comments.

This is so sad but the grieving thing does work. When my mare had a still born foal we did the same thing for her so she would understand unfortunatlyy I had driven there straight from work so my OH couldnt react to the message warning him not to let me go to the yard. It helped me too as if I hadnt seen the peaceful little body I would have conjured up all sorts of nightmares.

Thank you for your posts. Sadly the deed is now done. The seeing body thing did not work as this stressed my horse out completely so resorted to more sedation.

On a happy note his new friend has arrived and they are get on fine.

Aww..sorry to hear about your pony

but pleased to hear the new one has settled in ok.

My mare was pts just after Christmas. She shared a field with her frends for the past 8 yrs on and off. Don't think they've even noticed she's not there.
