Its the middle of summer and I just can't be bothered to ride. I told my horse's owner that I did not want her over the winte,r as I will be at university, last week and every since I just don't feel like riding even though I have her until september. Its also due to the fact that all local shows have been cancelled due to the bad weather and I am working for the next few Sundays so have nothing to aim for. She needs to be ridden everyday or else she is very spooky but in this weather its been really hard to and I don't want to batlle with her. Sometimes I wish she could go back now and I could just ride my dad's horse when I felt like it.

Can you give me any tips on getting motivated again or just tell to pull my socks up and get out and ride, please.

The thing is when I actually go out and ride I will enjoy it. I am just being really stupid, I am so lucky to have a horse and I am just wasting it. After lunch today I AM going to ride. Although just schooling in the field.

If I were you I would give the horse up for a while - its not fair on the horse and the owner.

There are no real tips for motivation and sometimes a break is the best cure - you will soon find out if your heart is really in it. Maybe ask yourself - are you a real horse lover or is it just the competion side of it that you enjoy?

At least if you let this horse go now while its not got too many problems - you have you dads horse to ride and you know in you heart you have let the other horse go at the right time. you maybe relived once its gone!

Thats happened to me too. Is it the weather? I also have no interest, though mine is poss added to because we have no facilities (just moved and having to build stables again) and it takes me 4 trips carrying everything I need to ride my horse, and he is spooky if not ridden regularly so that is very offputting and I have lost my nerve. Viscious circle. I am working v hard not to beat myself up over it. I am not competing this year (cant school - no facilities) so am taking a bit of a break from it all. Horses just in field getting fat and lazy. Poor show I know, but I can't force myself. Why don't you do exactly what you said, and send horse back and ride your dads ocassionally.

Just put your jods on, then just add your boots. Once that is done there is no point in staying home with your riding stuff on. So go to tack up your horse. Then school as if you were going to compete at the weekend.

I know exactly how you feel. I have a fab new horse - but it does take an effort to get on most evenings.

To be honest this bloomin weather is definately not helping!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry hun, its the bloody weather! I feel the same, but once Im on Im so glad I decided to ride. Just chuck your waterproof on and say bugger it and jump on.
At least then when the weather does change - you wont be trying to get your mare fit again for the competitions!
Best of luck x

I know exactly what you mean as I really found my self lacking in motivation at the start of the year when the weather was poo. However, my mare got an injury in March and is STILL on box rest just now. Only now are we starting to do some in-hand walking for 5mins a day.

So my new motto is to not take her for granted and make the most of every ride as you never know what's around the corner. I'd give anything to be able to get on and ride- even "boring schooling" just once a week! Never mind hacking out. Finding it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel as her recuperation has been so long already and there's still months ahead.

Like others have said, get your kit on asap! I find if I do it the minute I get in from work I'm fine. No sitting on the sofa, switching the telly on etc or I'll never move. In, changed, out again while I'm still on the go!

I go through this quite frequently - it all seems such an effort. I do tend to get through it, though and get my enthusiasm back. Don't make any hasty decisions, just see how it goes. This sh*t weather doesn't help either.

I find it harder to be bothered when its hot and sunny, i dont like the heat, i get prickly heat, my eyes get squinty and there are too many flies, i much prefer the crap weather

sometimes i cant be bothered either, dont let myself sit down on those days, just get changed and get out again
