Has anyone made a LOU claim? How long from start to finish?

I am devastated, my TB had the kissing spine op last July, after months of rehab and setbacks I started him back in work, initially he was going really well. Then he started showing all the same behaviours he had pre-op, took him back to the vet school and they have said there is nothing left they can do, so I have no options left except to claim LOU.

I have put so much time, money and emotion into him, so am gutted. I lost my 5 year old last Jan to wobblers, then lost my retired TB last month, now having to retire (and quite possibly pts) this one-:(

A friend of mine has just finalised a LOU claim, without going into too much long winded detail, it was hind limb lameness, dressage horse never going to get better to ride or compete only a pet, she had him PTS and claimed loss of use, vets wrote a detailed report, sent it to NFU they then get their vet to read it, give his opinion and they pay out- It took my friend 3 months of ringing and chasing the NFU at one point she was ringing every other day, and for example if they said blah blah blah is happening on Friday- then 4pm Friday she would ring to see if it had been done, 3 months from the horses' diagnosis, to getting paid out, she swears she only got it through because of her persistent badgering.

Hi, I had to claim Lou on one of my boys last year. I was totally devastated as he is only 10 and was supposed to be my little event horse. I bought him off the race track at 6 and spent the next 4 years trying to supple him up and after 4 years we still hadn't got anywhere so got the vet out and found that he had early onset of arthritis in his c5, c6 and c7 vertebrae which was presenting similar to wobblers. After a year of steroid injections and various other treatments, the vets finally told me there was nothing else we could do. So, I claimed Lou, moved my boys to a nice big pasture and whipped their shoes off and they now live out 24/7 and are having a happy retirement. Funny enough, he is absolutely fine just mooching round the field, and apart from getting bored sometimes, he is loving his life which makes me very happy :) im insured with pet plan and they were very helpful the whole way through. If you want any further questions, just shout! X x
