How many of you hae loss of use on your horse insurance? Just wondering really. I should've got it on my insurance but didnt. Also do you have a comp horse or a hack.
All my hunters had LOU on their insurance but i did have it taken off as it was pushing the premium through the roof! As long as their vet bills are covered that's all i'm worried about.
I own two horses - a very accident-prone gelding who is often unsound and a fit and healthy mare. I have LOU on him and not her.
Sadly the LOU is proving invaluable as my gelding went blind in one eye, only to lose the sight in his remaining eye this week. I am having to have him PTS as there are no other options and even rescue charities agree he is not a suitable horse to retire.
LOU is handly in this case as even a stone blind horse does not necc meet the BEVA guidelines for destruction, but they should still have to pay out under LOU. Sounds harsh but a payout will be a small comfort, more than the insurers getting all those premiums and me getting nothing!
It's a tough call though - so often LOU bumps up insurance massively, so I'd never criticise anyone for not having it.
It does make your premiums very high- best to weigh up the pros and cons really, I don't bother with it for mares but have it for geldings. Of course my horses aren't worth very much (in monetary terms) and so I'd prefer to save money on the premiums and just hope that nothing bad happens....
