If things go smoothly roughly how long does it take to actually get payment? Obviously it is dependant on a lot of stuff but just wondering what your individual claims have taken

Mine went quite smoothly and I think it was about two months from the initial claim to the actual payout. In between was correspondence, valuations, provisions of vet certificates and freezemarking etc.

Ehm, have just read your other post about asking seller to hold horse for you till it's paid out.....

My loss of use claim was started in Feb and it's still not settled so might be best to wait for the money to be in your hand before you go shopping....

It will depend on how straightforward the claim is to be honest and what the value of the horse was as some companies will have to refer higher values to get 'signed off' by their insurers. Also will depend on what vets report said. If there is no question that the horse is a LOU case then it really shouldn't take that long to be honest. Who you're actually insured with though could make a difference of course.

My old boss had a LOU claim with E&L.

It seemed straight forwards as the horse had severed most of its tendons and ligaments (foreleg/pastern)in an accident and was very lucky to be alive

. They took 18 months to finally pay out half of what he had paid premiums for but it didnt seem worth fighting any longer. The strange thing is that they continued to pay(very slowly) all the vet claims inc physio during this period when if they had paid LOU he would have been excluded from claims relating to the injury and it would have saved E&L ££££

My LOU claim went in some time after the 20th Feb (I remember as this was my birthday when she was x-rayed) and they settled just after Badminton - so in May. To be fair though it was an open and shut case and they were better off paying me my LOU than insisting I went through the treatment route as she was only insured for £3500.

Again I would agree it depends on the insurance company and the vets report. I definitely wouldn't go shopping until the claim was settled, not unless you can afford the new horse without the claim coming in.

mine was a couple of months. very straight forward as they had been paying the vets fees for the past 12 months, so got the vet confimration, spoke to me about the valuation, next thing i received a cheque.
