Just trying to sort out the insurance for the new horse and wondering if it's worth getting loss of use? Pet plan have given me a silly quote but KBIS is working out nearly £250 cheaper! He's 6 years old and I've bought him for £4250. Hoping to do riding club events and eventually some entry level BE.

What does everybody do, is it worth paying the extra?

Well I never take it out but really wish I had with both my retired horses! My latest horse is only nine and is currently undergoing a miriad of tests to find out his (many) problems. It is looking very much as though he is a write off at only nine years of age. Having the £5k insurance money would go a long way to keeping him and being able to afford another. As it is, I now have one definite retired horse, and one currently unridable and likely to be retired horse. I cannot afford to buy and care for a third and so will have to forego having a riding horse. I am lucky in that I still get paid to ride other people's horses but it is not the same as riding and competing your own.

Yes I do, you never are sure what is round the corner. My girl fractured her leg when she was 9, I was lucky she is fine now, horses will be horses and all sorts of things can happen which mean they can carry on with a happy life but not used for what they were once did.

I took it out and am really glad I did as my WB has a chronic SI dysfunction which the vets have all agreed has a very poor prognosis and I am currently mid LOU claim.

You will get differing opinions - those like me who have claimed and are glad to have it, those who regret not taking it and those who are happy not to have it.

I owned 2 native bred horses for over 16 years - both uninsured and without incident. I was right not to insure them as they were never sick or sorry, but of course it is a gamble and I think when it comes to owning a blood competition horse they are much more suceptible to an expensive injury. My horse has proved this theory. I am too embarrassed to say how much he has had paid out in claims in a year! :(

i have it on my boy as i would miss out on huge amount of money if he was LOU he is also rather accident prone and has never worked a winter in his life -.-

but my 2 year old no as she has no use as of yet and i only paid £350 for her for i dont think it would be worth it imo

Wagtail, sorry to hear about that, it sounds awful!

I decided to go with 75% LOU in the end as it didn't make it much more and no where near as much as 100%. Next year I'll hopefully know much better what I need and can amend the policy as I need to.

Thanks for all the advice
