Hi all! Apologies if this thread is in the wrong section, this is my first post here and I was torn between veterinary or the tack room however decided on this one as I don't need any medical advice as such, more just to get peoples opinions and stories (successful or not) on loss of use insurance claims - If I am in the wrong place please let me know!
For a bit of backstory; I purchased my mare last March, she was 5 stage vetted which she passed, and she is insured for her full sum of 8.5K - My loss of use payout is worth 6K.
Unfortunately due to being diagnosed with both severe kissing spines as well as severe arthritis in both front pasterns within the last 2 months, my vet and I have made the call to retire her. Our reasons for this are that due to the fact her arthritis was undiagnosed/unnoticeable until we were underway with our KS rehab, its pretty clear that the workload required of her to build her back up is not something her legs are capable of handling. My mare was medicated immediately after the arthritis was found and has been given the appropriate rest period, however there has been zero progress and she is still just as unsound as she was when I called the vet out for this problem in the first place. Long story short, her arthritis and her KS both have very different workload requirements and to keep her comfortable through her legs would mean her not being able to build her back up and vice versa.
My mare is insured under category 3 I believe, which includes activities such as unaffiliated dressage, unaff jumping, unaff showing, trec, flatwork & groundwork, mounted games, vaulting, riding & pony club activities etc, none of which she can do anymore.
My vet believes its worth a try with the loss of use claim, she said she will write us a report as needed and she will include as much information as we have as to why my mare is no longer able to be used for not just the activities I purchased and insured her for, but any at all (other than standing there in a field looking pretty - her favourite activity of all).
So back to what I said at the beginning, just looking to get peoples opinions as to whether you think I have good grounds or whether I'm likely to have the same experience as most who seem to make the LOU claim - Seems like so many people I've spoken to in person have had such a clear case for it and yet still been refused! Would love to hear your own experiences too.
I look forward to reading your responses and I thank you for them in advance
