My sons showjumper is just about to be marked for loss of use for jumping. Does any one know where they put the mark and what it looks like? He may come back as a nice hack in a year or so and dont want big ugly mark on him. Also can he be sold if people are aware what the mark means. I would of course explain and they could talk to his vet.

I've seen an I in a circle under the saddle. Yes, as far as I know he can be sold - it is only loss of use for a particular purpose you are claiming for usually.

It is an L in a circle, freezemarked. If you have it put under the saddle you won't see it when ridden, and can hardly see it in winter especially! Yes you can sell the horse if you inform the new owner about the LOU.

If the new owners then decide he can be jumped- (perhaps thats impossible in this case, but as a general principle) and go ahead & do it, can this come back on you? I suppose you have to have a clear contract as to what he is being sold as, in order to protect yourself?

I had a horse that I claimed LOU on, she went to be a companion, signed over etc, I was told she had a home for life could visit etc she had navicular. I received a call months later from a stranger asking about her as she was for sale, the companion hom had given my number to discuss her. I was gutted but couldnt do anything as she was no longer mine. I regret what I did to this day, I was in my early 20's and thought I was doing best. She couldnt be a hack like your horse and I suppose I should have had her pts to secure her future. Sorry for waffling on but the lady who rang me, rang again and said she couldnt get insurance for her as she was LOU, so just something to think about. I would think there would be no come backs on you as the horse would be sold with LOU brand and it would be on there backs if anything happened. I'd write on the reciept sold as seen 16.1hh etc, LOU claimed due to ......, can no longer jump or something like that.

My horse that I have on permanent (I hope!) loan has just been marked loss of use as he can't event any more due to osteoarthritis in his pastern, I'm now bringing him back into light work. Its just like a freezemark and its arranged by the insurance company, as far as I know the restrictions on what the horse can do are on the new insurance certificate that you get when the new 'loss of use' policy is drawn up. I can't say much now as I haven't had the certificate from his owner yet, but its in my loan agreement that he can't do strenous work.
I assume that if his new owners decided he can jump, and you stated that he couldn't in the loan agreement and his insurance states that he can't jump either, you would not be blamed if he hurt himself/his condition worsened if they jumped him, after all you can't be monitoring what they are doing all the time.
As for the marking, you can have it done on the back or shoulder, if he hasn't got a freezemark they will do that at the same time, most people go for the back as its not so painful and is doesn't show up at shows etc.

If the horse isn't already freezebranded they also have to do that as well unless they are identichipped, which my horse was, so he had to have the "L" in a circle, and another mark to show he was chipped. I decided to have his done on his shoulder, because I thought It would make him less likely to be stolen etc if it was very obvious that he had LOU. He's out on loan as a hack.

This is my mare who has the LOU stamp, it isn't very clear in the photo but is a L in a circle.

However we regret having her stamped as she is now back competing in unaffiliated SJ and affliated dressage.

The only rule I know of is BSJA requiring a vet certificate if a horse as LOU.
When i first started taking her out to competitions I wasnt sure what other people would think but I have no problems.

There was a horse out hunting yesterday with a LOU mark on its shoulder looked a nice horse and hunted all day.

Can you still insured for vet fees etc with maybe a disclaiming on the LOU leg etc???
