Hi
I am just going through the process of claiming Loss-of-use on my horse (16.2 gelding)
NFU want two valuations
a) what he was worth before the injury
b) what he worth now

I'm never gonna sell him but what on earth is he worth now - surely its nothing? He is still 1/10th lame although the Vet thinks he will be okay for light hacking. Does anyone have any experience / idea of value.
Btw its in passport that he cannot go for meat .... (dont know if thats makes a difference for valuation!)

Thanks in advance

The insurance should settle on a basis of the Market Value of the Horse prior to the incident/injury that the Loss of Use is based on.

They maybe be deciding whether to settle a 100% or a partial % of the value (ie if the horse can still be used for hacking it wouldn't be a 100% loss of use). However, I do not know the ins and out of the NFU policy. I would suggest possibly giving them a call and querying why they'd want to know the valueof the horse after the injury to be honest as, as you say it would not be worth much (if anything) depending on the extent of the problem.

I was asked these questions for my LOU claim this year by NFU. There's nothing sinister in this & they settled on the value of her before the injury.

I got a couple of people to write me a letter confirming what they believed the value to be before and then both wrote that they considered her value to be £500 after the event ie what I would get as a broodmare. If your horse will still be okay as a light hacker I would suggest a similar value?

it all depends on what he is doing. i had a tb who was stamped loss of use on the race track but was then evented and i did the junior europeans on him 2 years ago and sold him for a large amount of money.
