I'm not sure when you would claim for loss of use and what they would pay out for?
Does anyone know anything about this and has anyone made a successful claim?
I'm afraid I dont know anything about it what so ever and I am wondering if I should claim or not?

You will need to look at your policy. Loss of use is paid when your horse is no longer suitable for the purpose for which it is intended. So if you have a showjumper that can't be jumped.

You would need a vet to confirm the position, but your policy booklet should tell you all you need to know, if not try speaking to your broker.

She has arthritis which is only going to get worse atm she is in light work but very limited hacking and no jumping.....no really sure if thats something you would claim for or not and dont have my terms and conditions to hand.

I havent claimed for this, but a friend of mine has. I understood that the vet would let you know, if he considered that the injury ws longterm and effected your use of the horse. As long as you are covered then , You get in touch with the insurance company. they will then send your vet the appropriate papers to sign.
Is your horse not going to be rideable?, Id discuss with my vet.

Thanks alot, she's insured for general riding club activites including XC, affiliated competition so she doesn't fufill this purpose anymore.
Any Q - do you have to claim loss of use before the year of cover runs out?
That sounds a bit confusing....I started claiming for the arthritis in September 2009 so would I need to claim for the LOU before September 2010?

If you are continuing to claim you will need to claim loss of use before your policy runs out or is up for renewal. If the policy is up for renewal you may well find that the insurance company slap an exclusion on the areas that have been affected by the arthritis.

Lordy100 - thanks a million, thats really helpful, another question lol - My insurence is up for renewal in may, but I only sarted claiming for this in Sept so will I need to claim LOU before may or before Sept? Thanks so much can you tell I dont have a clue, I just thought if I'm entitled to it then why not

LOU cover really bumps up the premium so if I were you I would def try and claim while if you can. I know of a number of people who have successfully claimed LOU for their general riding club horses or eventers after a disgnosis of arthritis/DJD. All of these are now used for light hacking/dressage. It sounds like you def have a valid claim.

Check your policy wording as terms differ depending on the company. If you are claiming for vets fees treatment from sept then generally you will have 12 months to continue claiming, so up to the flowing september.

Loss of Use is an entirely different section and under our policy terms a loss of use claim will be met should the horse be deemed permanently incapacitated during the 365 days following renewal (irrespective of whether the policy is renewed). The horse though will have had to have sustained the injury / been diagnosed with the condition (ie arthritis) within the period of insurance.

Therefore, in your case it wouldn't matter if you renewed your policy or not with regards to either your vets fees claim or LOU claim. Providing the LOU is to do with the problem that occurred during the insurance period then it would be covered providing you submitted that LOU claim before May 2011.

Does that make sense? The insurance company shouldn't stipulate you renew the insurance in may BUT check your policy to be sure!

LadyT that makes perfect sence thank you, I'm going to try and claim asap so the timings wouldn't really make a difference anyway but it's good to know I've got plenty of time. I will have a good read though my terms and conditions tonight and then have a speak with my vet.....thanks everyone you've been so helpful, its one of those things that you dont really know about till you've done it yourself or known someone do it...will keep you posted

i had a horse who was loss of use, it didnt bump up my insurance, it just didnt cover that excisting injury?? all companies are different, but i did find only the company i calimed with would insure him, noone else would.

So what happens if you have a horse that was intended for advanced dressage but due to an condition can only do low level things. Will it still be counted even if its technically still does the same thing?

Generally if the horse could only do a certain level of work and not what it's intended use was then you'd get a % of the LOU/sum insured of the horse (say 60%).

Haven't read all the replies, so please forgive if already covered

Bought Dizz 20th December 2008. Insured her 23rd December 2008. Came in lame 1st January 2009. Long story. I now have until December 2010 to see if I need to claim LOU (I bought her to BSJA, but due to bony irregularities on her pelvis we don't know if she will be up to it).

Speak to your insurance company. Dizz is with the NFU and they were very helpful and explained everything clearly
