loss of use

Ive claimed it, once on a mare with Navicular. It was years ago and I got about 80% of her sum insured as she was a mare and could have been bred from. I had to have her freezemarked with an L in a circle and that was it. My vet wrote them a letter confirming she was LOU and then they said she was no longer insurable so mine to do what I wanted. She went as a companion.
I do think things may have changed though on the re insuring after LOU.

Hi I did lou on 8 year old.He was freezemarked with L and turned away for year.He has actually made good recovery enough to be happy hacker and can still get insurance with exclusions on whatever the claim was for .In his case three legs:rolleyes:Make sure you agree lou before your year is out.

I have just claimed loss of use on my mare. She is 15 and I have put her in foal. She may or may not come back into work but my current insurers have agreed to continue insuring her for vets fees (excluding issues she currently has), for a broodmare value on death of £800. As she is in foal, I consider this worthwhile. If she returns to soundness in the future I would start to work her again. Re LOU insurers will offer you a value depending on whether you keep as field companion/broodmare or PTS. Usually if PTS you would get full value insured but if kept, you would get percentage. It all does depend on age of horse also as to what that percentage is.
