Yesterday night I said goodbye to my little Falabella Badger
He wasn't right yesterday morning, vet attended and suspected sycamore poisoning or grass sickness due to symptoms. Whilst waiting for bloods to be run he started showing signs of colic so I was told to get him straight into the practice. By this stage his heart rate was at 100bpm but he was bright eating and gut was still working!
After scans etc we decided to give him a chance and monitor him over a couple of days and keep in at the vets. At 8:30 last night I received the call to say he could no longer swallow properly and it was time to let him go! At 9:05 he was gone, he slipped away peacefully with me holding his head and telling him I loved him.
Anyone have any experience of grass sickness?
I have great advice from my vets, am going to contact the grass sickness trust tomorrow but wanted more info from people who have gone through the same.
I now keep thinking about all the what if's, what if I'd got the vet out last week when I noticed he had a slight cough when eating haylage? What if I had of told my cousin to get a vet out to him Friday when she phoned me whilst I was alway to say his hind legs was shaking (he had wobblers so I put that down to that and advised to give bute)!
I left him for four days come home Sunday night, see him for first time yesterday and loose him. I could have spent them four days with him instead the last few days of his life I was away enjoying myself at Badminton!! Instead the last day I spent with him was sitting with him whilst he was laying down most of the day twitching and shaking!
I know what counts is he didn't suffer and I was there with him for his last day but it makes me feel no better at all.. It's not sunk in properly yet either!
My vets have been amazing, I got a phone call today just to make sure I was ok which was lovely and really touched me.
Just want my little guy back though.
