Hi all,

Had a pretty awful day today and hoping by talking about it with some horsey minded people I might be able to make sense of it all?

I have just been given the ride of three lovely, genuine competition (show jumping) horses which have been out of proper work for a few weeks and need bringing back into properly. I have been up to the yard four times now, the past three times have gone really well and I have really got back into jumping - The horses are lovely and the owners just as nice.

However, today I went up and took my mother & grandfather who I get up tight in front of (long story) and completely messed up. I rode like an idiot and got two of three horses on a couple of really bad strides and the stallion I rode ended up knocking his stifle, I feel so totally guilty. Now I just feel useless and remember why I gave up competing in the first place, I just lost my confidence as I get so worried about the horses.

Now I am seriously considering not going back and riding for the owners as 1. I feel so embarrassed and 2. I don't feel good enough, I've really let the owners down.

What would you do?

Put it down to the fact you were having a bad day..... pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get your a**e back down there!! :D

Everyone has an off day now and again - don't beat yourself up!!:)

At least you're riding...... I've lost my mojo and can't be bothered to ride my horse.... 2 weeks now.... I'm not putting any pressure on myself to ride..... I'll get back in the saddle when I'm good and ready!

Keep at it, swallow your nerves and get on with it :)

I was in the same boat last year, get some lessons and move on with ti. It's only a small bump in the road.

Get out hunting and have some fun ;) does you the world of good.

Take a step back and look at it logically. You know why you rode badly today (with the pressure of family there) apart from that it has gone fine. The greatest gift our horses have is they forgive us our errors, while we beat ourselves up and analysis every single little error.

Tomorrow is another day, the owners have faith in you, the horses only live for now and have the most forgiving nature of all, take the pressure off of yourself and go and enjoy them for a few days and remember why you like riding. Once you remember that, then your mojo will come back very quickly.

Good luck.

You poor thing, does sound like a rotten day, but don't be silly, of course you shouldn't give up!

The owners of these horses obviously have more faith in your abilities than you do, or they wouldn't have given you the rides in the first place.

Concentrate on how well you got on the first few times you worked them and try to dismiss today as blip on the radar - you know you have issues when family watches, so this was bound to make you uptight.

If I was you, I'd have a stiff drink and NEVER take the relatives back again!
Speak to the owners if you're feeling self conscious about having a bad day - I'm pretty sure they'll understand :)

No dont give up, we all have off days and you have the benefit of knowing why.
Get back down there tomorrow with a positive frame of mind and just get on with it, one positive day and you'll feel so much better about things.
Concentrate on the positive and learn from the mistakes, then you even take a positive aspect from the bad days x
