George pulled off a front shoe in that gloopy mud today, fortunately it came clean off, but he has cut his back leg and it is a very clean cut so I guess one of the nails caught it. So whilst I organise when the farrier can come what can I do with George? As he doesn't have brilliant feet I am assuming no riding or turnout, but is it ok for him to go on the horsewalker and do some groundwork (not lunging) in the school? Apologies if I sound like a right numpty

but G is my first horse and this is his first lost shoe!

Thanks

I wouldn't ride if he has lost a front shoe, back shoe lost would probably be ok to do some work. Be careful if you say he's not got great feet, I turned mine out when he'd lost a shoe and he lost huge chunks of hoof and went lame

If you have a hoof boot I'd put that on and he'll be fine or even some vet wrap/tape.

as to riding it really depends on if he feels his feet or not. my horse isn't shod and never has been he doesnt feel his feet so goin on roads etc without shoes isnt a problem but a friends horse if he looses a shoe and she takes him out he start limping really depends on the horse. but turning out is fine

Yes I would turnout, especially as the ground is soft at the moment, it shouldnt damage the foot. I wouldnt ride though, but I would have thought horse walker and lunging would be ok, and I school in a menage with out a shoe.

how strange... my mare has just lost a front shoe too lol first time she has ever lost a shoe and shes my first horse so was a bit unsure at first but im sure she can cope

i have turned her out but nothing else, she has got good strong feet) just got to wait for my horrid farrier to come out now

I always turnout when they have lost a shoe. doesnt do them any harm. I wouldnt ride on the road and it would depend on the horse if i rode in the school

Mine lost a front shoe last friday and I had to hack him to new yard - he was ok. Lunged x2 and schooled x1 (had to do something with him as he was going dolally due to being in for worming at new yard.
Got shoe back on on Friday (an agreed date with farrier). Turned out Sat and today and.....Guess what - same shoe has come off again. I rode him in the school, went fine.
But that is me and my horse.

Norm lost a front shoe last Saturday, I rode a couple of times gently in the school to stretch his legs then Farrier came on Wednesday. Hacked out today and yesterday and guess what - he lost the other front shoe this afternoon! I'll continue to turn out and some gentle work in the school as long as he feels ok. Other mare also lost front shoe from the same foot as well this afternoon - its not the off fore is it?!?!

mine always loses a shoe or 2, I now have hoof boots ( old Macs) and can continue to ride him out then.

He is a very sensitive boy and hobbles like mad if he is walked on hard surfaces without shoes. The old Macs have been fab and mean that i can still ride him.

If the horses had good feet we would race them missing shoes - if you go caerful on the road, and hard ground you will be fine.
