Just wondering how many of you out their find it a pain in the bum when your horses lose shoes in the field. obviously losing a shoe is bad enough from a damage hoof point if view, but wondered if any of you spend hours marching round the field trying to find said lost shoe/shoes so that the farrier can put the thing back on..or at least make sure no other horses can tread on the nails that could possibly be sticking out of it. Or do you just leave them

I generally have a wander round to see if I can find it. Often they are bent or too worn to reuse anyway. I have never worried about the shoe causing damage to the horse but our ground is fairly soft.

When ours were shod - if they lost a shoe in the field we wouldn't turn out again until we had found it (it would have been sods law that a horse would then have stood on it!). A proper pain, sometimes those things are bloody elusive!

I wont rest until I find the lost shoe so systemically go over the field until it has been found. We got a metal detector last year and it was a godsend in the thick clay last winter for finding them.

I have had one disappear off the face of the earth a few months ago, One hanging out of a tree and one in the field next door with a large section of sheep fencing sticking out :o

My old horse used to lose shoes fairly regularly. I tried hard to find them, and you can bet as soon as I had given up and was walking back to the gate, it would miraculously appear at my feet.

Buy your OH a metal detector. We now have hundreds of horse shoes, but no idea which fits what horse!

Absolute genius! Why didn't I think of that before? I always try to find the shoe, depending on the size of the field, I'll either march up and down in lines looking for it if the field is smallish- or just have a hopeful mooch if it's big! Such a pain as I a) worry about them standing on the nails and b) it's so so annoying if they've only just been shod to need to get a new shoe!

*Wanders off to check ebay for metal detectors..*

I usually have a good hunt around but certainly wouldn't stop the horses being turned out!

Top of the month - next time your horse is shod - keep the set of shoes then next time you lose one at home or at a show and there is a farrier on site, hey presto one replacement shoe!!

My horse lost a shoe last week! He was turned out with someone elses horse that lives out 24/7, so I thought it best to go find it (just in case) :)

This is what I was doing yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that - in a 13 acre field  Back and forth, back and forth - Nothing!

Found another 2 shoes, but not the one I was after - the one with stud holes that had only been on a week and not even seen concrete! grrrr!
