The tooth that is separated from the others is a canine tooth from some long distant ancestor. They are often called tushes. Most males have two in each jaw, most females don't have any.

Odd, aren't they?

Vet told me they believed they were 'fighting' teeth in male horses.

Apparently she'd been called out to a gelding who had injured himself getting his canine caught in a haynet - never underestimate the ability of a horse to run up a vet bill

I knew a gelding who knocked out several of his own teeth attacking another horse through the partition in a lorry .........
He was a phenomenal show jumper but a bit of a nightmare in other ways.

I also got told off by a friend for keeping one of my pony's milk teeth when it fell out but not saving my children's baby teeth!
