I went to feed my boy this morning and he had 3 or 4 flies on one of his eyes which seems a tiny bit goey. This time last year he had a bit of an eye infection and the vet gave me some drops which cleared it up. At this stage he's not showing any sign of infection (no swelling, redness etc) but there's just a bit more "sleepy dust" than usual and the flies bugging it. I've put some fly repellent on his face to try and ward them off but don't want to get too close to his eyes with it in case it exacerbates the problem.

Can anyone recommend any all purpose eye drops for horses etc or things I could try to ward them off - might salt water help?? May have to invest in a fly fringe or fly mask I think too??

I'd recommend a mask too. My boy's eyes swell up and get weepy with too many flies and his mask works a treat.
I also think he thinks he looks a bit "special" in it :)

deffo get a mask, my girl gets very runny and sore eyes, last year then got really inflamed and sore- if your horse does get eye problems i use 'goldeneye' eye drops and it clears it up right away! =] used for humans and can be bought from any chemist

When my mares eye went like that I bathed it with very lightly salted tepid water and dribbled it over her eyeball. Sounds awful but it worked. Then I applied some ointment to the inside of her eye called Goldeneye from the Chemists. Worked a treat and got rid of the goo instantly (overnight) A fly mask was used on the worst fly days.

Agree with above.

Goldeneye contains chloremphenicol which is the same thing Dr's prescribe for conjunctivitis and Vets for horses.

I have just bought a rambo flymask for my horse, his eyes were swollen and he was very itchy around his forelock. stays on and he seems much happier. only £11 and free post on ebay

I have used Goldeneye and Brolene eye ointments with great success. They are human eye ointments available from chemist. Horses dont mind them being put in eye and they clear up sticky eye quickly in horses.

my gelding has exactly the same problem but he wont keep his fly mask on. i have tried both the original face mask and the fly fringe but he gets out of them everytime.
I lather his face in fly gel and wash his eye with tepid salt water

Hi,

I agree - Golden Eye ointment is really good. I also use cold tea (without milk and sugar!) on any animal with a sore or gooey eye. Just make a cup of tea and then put it in the fridge. Then use it to bathe the eye a couple times a day and it works a treat!

Thanks so much everyone! I invested in a fly mask that very morning and the problem cleared up within 24 hours, however, I will definitely add some golden eye to my first aid kit I think as it sounds like a very good solution and it seems my boy may be a little prone to this sort of thing!!

I agree Goldeneye is a useful addition to the first aid kit. However I have found it quite difficult to buy. I can find places that sell it but they fire loads of questions about symptons at you and it seems if you don't fit the criteria they refuse to sell it to you. Obviously I don't say its for a horse but I'm beginning to feel as if I'm dealing in some illegal substance!!

Ha!! That's quite funny - the world is so full of jobsworths!! Like you're gonna take it home and have a fine time abusing eye drops!!!! I might just say it's for my horse and see what they say!!! Tee hee.

Mine got a nasty eye, the usual eye wipes hadn't worked and I was considering getting something from the vet, but I thought I would use tea first. I used tepid tea, fresh each brew and dribbled it into his eye, as it was warm he didn't mind. I could do it 2 or three times a day and it cleared up very quickly.
