I have noticed/met lots of people who have horses, more than one i know three different people who have between four and eight horses and they dont ride or care for them daily one person grooms and rides a month in summer but dosent even bother with them the winter the owner of field isnt bothered as long as he gets paid. There is nothing wrong with any of these horses at all what so ever one is thirty retired, the others are all 4to approx seven they are all friendly and dont even get caught its such a shame if you go in field with halter they are like me!me! please ! and really try to follow you out ,please note none have lameness issues etc, just wondering why really, as one day maybe grazing other situation will arise if horses have to be sold and they wont be much good to any one <all these horses are 15-16.3hh >never off field etc,, i just think if something happens to owners who would buy all these horses?I know its none of my business at all.Just think one day ....

I dunno..

I know 2 people who breed tons of horses. Beautiful, well bred horses.

One person never rides them, most of them have never even been broken in! Not because the owner/breeder is scared but mainly because she never has time. I think she likes the kudos of having them and keeps meaning to break them in and take them to top level dressage but never does...most of them are stallions too. One of them is 9 now and 2 are around 7 and still not broken in. They are just bored and going crazy in their fields.

Another person also breeds horses, mostly top showjumping lines. Again they have hundreds of broodmares and youngsters and older horses and they are never ridden. This person is scared I think. This person will lunge them at a flat out gallop but never ride them. The horses are always a bit crazy because they are fed so much competition feed but never worked properly. They sell a few but have far too many for one couple to cope with. The people are also broke, no wonder with so many horses! The horses are also so so fat with too much feed/grass and too little work some of them have laminitis. Its disgusting IMO and very very selfish of the owner/breeder.

I dont undertand why people would have beautiful, stunning, intelligent competetion type horses and just never ride them.. and not really be able to afford them either. Its madness. I think they do it because they think they look good having the horses.

I'm happy with my one horse and riding him every day!

I just think one way ticket on the meat wagon one day....
not many people have time or experience to have a unridden for four years green16,2 7 y.o who has not even been handled at all really :( and one of these owners who owns eight is quite old

I see this all the time, there are loads around us, it drives me nuts, mainly because it's such a waste of good horses.

If people want pets, they should buy hamsters not horses

Surely it is up to them.

As long as welfare and general health needs are being met those horses may well be quite happy mooching about in their own little herd - they don't fret that they could be going around a XC course after all, that is just a human thing.

I suppose the good point is they are living the equine life I guess as they are meant to!
But, if nobody is checking them it would be quite easy for one to develop lami or any other injury - I know a lot of people who chuck their horses out at the beginning of summer and don't go to the yard until end of summer then. These horses are always fine!
Its ours who are seen to twice a day who usually become ill!

Of course its there choice, but people who have them and dont spend time with them or any one else,ie. a carer /daily checks just a drive by ....!one owner had one pts <a two y.o > due to worms<one owner dosnt worm her horses > and one died over a few days . colic. It seems such a waste , yes it is owners business i said that from start but these horses are getting quite ferral !Im only thinking of their future ,its none of my business just i was thinking there are a lot of horses around people had horses and never bothered with them at all .....not even a pat ......and dont forget i said no one else does it for them neither
Yes kellys heroes your right ! Would be just our luck !
Just there must be so many possible loanees who would love to do it i bet

Agree.

Until they become a welfare issue then it isn't anybodys business what anyone does or does not do with their horses, or how many they have. If anyone is concerned then report to the appropriate authorities. :)

I have 2 mares, and i dont ride either of them, theyre just pets (rather expensive ones may i add :p)

I lunge/longrein them to keep them fit, they get massive beds, come in at night in the winter, rugs, feeed nice hay ect because they are spoilt rotten lol.

Neither of them had a good start in life but now they just enjoy all the fuss, grooming and attention!

And im broke, i have to work to keep them. People are totally amused by this stupid girl working her ar*e off to pamper 2 mares which nobody else would ever want and gets no riding in return .. :p

Good for you monty - I can't see there is anything wrong with having horses as pets, as long as they are properly looked after. My horse is my pet, alright he does get ridden but certainly not every day and sometimes he'll go a week or 2 without being ridden at all.
I go to my horse everyday, mostly twice a day in the summer and always twice a day in winter.
My horse did a lot of dressage and competing before I had him but I'm sure he's not bored in the field with other horses as, after all, that's all horses really want - a field where they can be a horse.

i try not to get worked up about things that dont really matter. As long as the horses welfare isnt a problem i wouldnt see it as my business if the horses were ridden or otherwise. I wouldnt be concerned if it looked like no-one was bothering with them, as i know from experience ive been on a yard where it might have looked like i never came up where in reality i was up before anyone else and came up after everyone else had gone in an attempt to avoid the yard bitchyness and politics :)
as for the horses not being wormed, how do you know they arent? Unless she told you they arent in which case fair enough. but i dont tell random people when ive wormed my horses either. maybe she uses worm counts?
i have a very nice horse i got from a person that sounds similar to the one in your post, she was over 10 and unbroken, she was a total angel to back and is now teaching a small child to ride :)
