Right I have put myself in at the deep end and decided to enter a show with Whiskey (Welsh Section D) along with my friend who is taking her coloured cob. Theres inhand and ridden, so questions are:

How would the horses have to be presented for inhand and ridden?

What do we have to wear for both??

Can I get away with jodphurs in the inhand or do I have to be black trousers and if so what kind of trousers?

and also, my friend will be taking her cob gelding to the same show so could you answer the questions for both of us

Also, what tack for ridden?? At the moment he has got a brown gp saddle and a brown cavesson bridle with a padded noseband and a velvet browband.

He has got a black inhand bridle to

1 more question - do you have to have a special inhand bit or can you use what you normally use (a waterford snaffle)

We were thinking of doing these classes:

Class 2 Open In Hand - Horses & Ponies 4yrs old & over - Me and Whiskey & Lucy and Jim

Class 3 Mountain & Moorland In Hand - Me and Whiskey

Class 4 Coloured, Spotted & Palamino In Hand - Lucy and Jim

Class 12 Ridden Mountain & Moorland (LR can compete in this class also) - Me and Whiskey

Class 13 Ridden Coloured, Spotted & Palamino - Lucy and Jim

Class 16 Ridden Cob - Me and Whiskey & Lucy and Jim

Aww he's lovely I love that colour chestnut!

Brown tack is always correct for showing, for ridden m and m/cobs you need a plain flat hunter type bridle so you could just change the noseband and browband on your bridle.

Not sure about the in hand bridle, I would think you'd get away with black but a proper in hand bit looks best with a leather lead rein/chain coupling. I think some Welsh get shown in a white webbing halter but not 100% which ones!

If you wanted to do proper cob classes with your welshie you'd have to hog his mane and scalp his feathers which would be a real shame so I'd stick to mnm.

Re your turnout dark plain trousers look better than jodhpurs, with a hacking jacket, collar and tie and hat. Charity shops are a good place to search for ties/shirts and trousers

M and M in hand - if you haven't got an inhand bridle use your ridden unter bridle with normal reins should be ok. As for dress beige/cream trousers with hacking jacket, shirt and tie, hat (make sure it doesnt come off too easily. Same for Coloured. They usually show mares and foals in white halters. I would suggest a bridle with a bit.

Ridden M and M - as custardsmum. No Martingale. Long boots or boots and chaps for adults, short boots for children

For all M and M classes they should not be trimmed or plate

For coloureds same tack should be workmanlike bridle, Plain noseband and browband. Discreet numnah etc

You may have and issue in the cob class as IMO the Welshie would not be cobby enough and should be hogged out. You will need to decide what you want to do.

If you do a search on web there are some really good guides out there. That will cover all the things I have forgotten to mention.

Good luck

As gypsy cob said except

Sec D geldings can also be shown in White halters!

Alway long boots on large breed M&M's and show cobs

Make sure you're presented nice and neat, remember all the little things like hair put up and preferably in a hair net. We lost out on a championship last year due to minor presentation details because it was so close between 1st and reserve.

A thoroughly scrubbed pony with sparkling tack and a well presented rider/handler makes all the difference, as well as lots of practice at home with things like standing your horse up for someone in place of a judge and some trotting up. Whatever you wear (for inhand, pref black pants) make sure you can run like a crazy person in it to show off his lovely trot to its best.

Best of luck!!
