I don't know if it has made the news there but Queensland has been having major floods and rain, so far it has mainly been out west were its relatively low pop. density.
The flood waters are now reaching the coast (Brisbane and surrounds which as quite densely populated) and combined with the torrential rain there are serious flash floods causing total chaos.

Lots of vibes please for all horses and horse owners involved, they need all the help they can get.

Mother nature at her worst. I hope it eases for everyone soon, and I hope that if those 2 horses didn't make it, it was quick for them. Poor people. Everything just gone in what seems like seconds.

It is absolutely horrific Felicity. I went to secondary school in Toowoomba. One of my sisters has lost everything in Dalby and my parents house was under a 7m wall of water that came through their village on the outskirts of Toowoomba, thankfully they got out in time, unfortunately, Laddie, my A grade jumper, at 29years young, wasnt strong enough to swim against the wall of water. He was a fantastic old campaigner and didnt deserve to go like that.

It is awful as with no landline phones, and mobile reception being affected due to towers being destroyed, I cant get regular updates on anything.......... All I can do is watch news, surf websites and hope for any information.

I'm not that religious but I am praying for everyone.

The scale of it is immense, a total area affected according to some websites is nearly 20 times bigger than the UK, mostly all now underwater............. totally unimaginable for anyone over here.

Must be horrendous for everyone involved, cant imagine what it must be like, thought it was bad but didnt realise how bad:(

So sorry mbequest, huge vibes for your family and hugs for you.

mbquest so sorry about your old horse - it is so sad:(

My cousins in Perth are part of the Emergency Volunteer force you have over there (forget its 'proper' name) and they were flown to help in Qld before Christmas and again now to help wherever they can - we spoke to them at Christmas and they said it was bad then and by all accounts it is now worse:(

Oh God Mbequeast I'm so sorry. :(
I hope your family is ok and that they manage to salvage something, at least they are safe.
I've been to Toowomba on field trips and its hard to imagine that creek flooding to that height, especially as it is on the edge of a cliff essentially.

I know a few other people who don't know what happened to their horses and fear the worst.

Thats the most incredible thing Felicity, as you know Toowoomba is practically ON TOP of the flipping Great Dividing Range, water must have been at some force to create the destruction it did in Toowoomba. Christ only knows what havoc it will cause to the poor folk at the bottom of the range..... and from there, can keep on going til it hits Brissie and the surrounding towns. It is completely and utterly unstoppable, and it wont till it hits the Sea......

I just hope the people at the bottom of the Range towards Brissy realise what is coming.

I will never forget that Toowoomba is at the top of the range - 7 day soil field trip and we start down the freeway that goes off the edge and suddenly see all our equipment over take us as the side of the trailer had fallen off :o

So sorry to hear about your family and horse mbequest.

One of my best mate's lives in Sapphire and his brother is in Rockie (thankfully up a hill), so far they've been ok but I heard a guy from Emerald on the radio the other day so it's getting very close.

Thoughts are with everyone over there and hope they all make it through this ok.

HI mbequest,

another ex-pat aussie here - i totally feel your pain. My family were all affected by the Victorian bushfires, lost horses, dogs, sheep, house, friends, the lot. They were extremely lucky to have survived. Their horses didnt.
Am thinking of you during these hard times, PM me if you want to chat or whatever, im in bucks too!

Been emailing my pal who moved out there in Nov. She's just outside Brisbane but luckily is OJK for now although a few roads have been cut off.

mbquest - so sorry to hear what has happened to your horse and family.

I have family on the Gold Coast who have been affected but not to a great extent - the used to live in Toowoomba and I'm so relieved that they're no longer living there!

My thoughts and prayers are with them all too. So sorry to hear of the losses.
It makes me feel so useless as there is nothing I can do except hope and pray for them

Thanks for all your thoughts and vibes guys. Managed to get hold of parents this afternoon, middle of the night over there, but no one is sleeping.

As well as the loss of Laddie, dad reports that all this years foals, and last years yearlings have died as well as several of the broodmares. He found the body of one foal about 4metres up in a tree. He is a shattered man.

This a link to an Austrailan horse forum where people are trying to keep track of friends and their horses.

Sadly not all good news, I'm posting it mainly because in amoungst the first 10 pages are good links for info on the floods and what is happening, for any ex-pats Aussie's who may be reading.

I hope evryone has managed to contact their families and friends.

How terrible for you & your family. Horrific footage of the news this morning, can't imagine what it must be like. Vibes for your family & those affected MB.

Utterly tragic, Queensland floods have now claimed 9 lives, with more than 70 people missing. 1.25million square kilometres now declared a disaster zone. Brisbane residents along the river are now being evacuated, with King Tides predicted from the ocean and the Wall of Water coming from the floods, due meet head on later today, it is potentially the worst natural disaster ever seen in Australia's history.

mbequest, that is so terrible, your words about your horses being lost have haunted me all night, i cannot imagine how awful it must be. i'm just praying that nobody else will be lost. even when it all stops, the clean-up is going to be an almost insurmountable job. :( :( :(
i hope a lot of international aid will be sent their way.

I saw the horrific footage from that area this morning and can't believe any thing, hunam or animal, could survive the force of that water. My thoughts are with everyone on the ground there and to all with families and friends in the area. mbequest - I am so sorry to hear of your families losses, you all must be devastated.

Sorry for your loss mbequest - I've just got the news that Dad has been evaucated from his house this morning (he lives on the Brisbane River) and that everything that I own (apart from what I have been able to purchase here in the UK) hasnt been able to be saved. I just hope that the photos havent been completely destroyed when the flooding eases. They say that these floods will superceed the floods from 74, and that devastated Brisbane back then :(

mbquest I am so very sorry for your loss. I have tears in my eyes reading your posts. I can only imagine the anguish you and your family are going through right now :(

RIP Laddie and all other's lost in this absolutely tragic disaster.

All those human and animals affected will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

mbequest- how heartbreaking for you and your family, just devastating.

:(

I hope there is no more loss of life- human or animal- and the area can recover. Best wishes and positive vibes to all those affected, so scary and sad. :(
