I echo this entirely. I almost feel a bit quilty sat here so far away and not really comprehending what it really must be like there at the moment.
 
Its horrific, Ive been watching it on Spanish news the past few days.
It looks like something out of a movie.

MB I am truly sorry to hear your family is caught up in all this, and my thoughts are with you, I am so sorry to hear about your old boy too.

I just hope things start to quieten down and that no more animals and people are injured/killed.

I am unbelievably grateful that despite the devastation and loss of animals at my parents place, they managed to get out alive.

Tragically there are stories of houses and cars with whole families inside being washed away. There is video footage of grown men inconsolable about the fact that whilst they were trapped on the roofs of their houses, they were unable to help others being swept away. One mans story of blood curdling screams coming from inside a house being swept past his has truly haunted me and reduced me to tears. But this is nothing that this man will have to live with for the rest of his life.

For those of you who may not know, the Wivenhoe dam, built to protect Brisbane from flooding is now at breaking point. If it bursts, this flood will be of biblical proportions. Not my words, but the words of the QLD Premier.

MBequest, I can't think of anything to say to you that could be of any comfort, I read your post and just cried. My heartfelt thoughts and sympathy go to you and your family, but it can never be enough.

I have just seen the most harrowing footage of horses being swum behind small boats to rest their heads against the rooves of submerged houses. They are absolutely exhausted and there is nowhere for them to go. Words can't describe this, it is purely horrific.

Go and hug your horses extra hard tonight everyone, we are very very lucky xxx
 
Amongst all the horror some good news. Friends who had small stud near Toowoomba were caught out by the flash flood.
They managed to swim their stallion to the main road and let him loose hoping he would find high ground by the time they got back to their house all they could do was take to their roof and wait to be airlifted. For the next 3 days they assumed the mare and foals had perished.
This afternoon they managed to get back to their property to find all except the oldest mare at the front gate waiting for dinner.
 
Hi. Im new to the forum, but i wanted to send hugs to all thoses affected by qld floods. Im in sydney & watching it on the news. Theres all day coverage on all tv channels. Its just heartbreaking and the worse is yet to come when the flood meets king tide tomorrow. 20,000 homes will be swamped...
 
I did post earlier but the more I see the footage, the more horrified I am. It is just unimaginable the horror of it all, both for human and animals.
Sitting here I just feel so useless.
All I can do is pray for all caught up in this horror.
 
This may be too late for many but a friend in Melbourne has posted on FB that Storage King is offering free storage for those in Brisbane, they have trucks and traliers at the ready to help people evacuate - call 1800storage
 
It's horrible, I knew it was bad but seeing tonight's news where the water's just slowly creeping through the city is heartbreaking.

Thoughts to everyone and anyone who's out there currently. Mother Nature is a remarkable but cruel thing :(
 
I've been thinking about what effect this must be having on the animal population since hearing about the floods on the news.

I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like. It truly is the sort of thing you never expect to happen.

My condolences to all and I hope that things don't get any worse.

As well as the loss of Laddie, dad reports that all this years foals, and last years yearlings have died as well as several of the broodmares. He found the body of one foal about 4metres up in a tree. He is a shattered man.

Stencilface - they haven't seen their stallion yet but word has come through that someone has a stallion matching his description (Appalosa & branded) safe on their property further down stream.

The horses resting their heads on the roof - by their lack of movement appear to be standing on something - going by general house design - it will be either a garage or patio roof.
So hopefully if they get some food and are not to cold they will be OK - one saving grace is that its almost tropical up there so realtively warm so hypothermia isn't a massive/priority concern.
 
I knew those horses would be standing on something, just hope they managed to stay there.

Can imagine this weather is only a bonus for crocs and sharks tbh :o
 
With the King tides there have been reports of Sharks along way inland... :eek:

Yes crocs are having a ball, fortunately its far enough south to only really have the freshwater sort not the saltwater chaps (who are really grumpy) and not many of those at that.
 
I've posted these on FB, but for those who arent friends, I'd thought I'd put then here also.

Transport Queensland are estimating that there are some 55000 miles of road to be either repaired or rebuilt following the flood. Compare that to the 2800miles of Motorway there are in GB or, it's twice the length of the Equator.

Water levels topped out at 22m in Ipswich.

1.3million square kilometres now declared a disaster zone. thats more than 5 times the size of the entire UK.

within 24 hours of the inland tsumami hitting Toowoomba, an Emergency Flood appeal had already reached $30 million.


The northwest of Queensland, where the flooding started some 3-4 weeks ago is now under a cyclone watch.
 
mbequest, condolences to your family, they must be devastated. Thankfully they are themselves ok, which must be such a relief for you.

I travelled the Queensland coast last year, and can't begin to imagine how much of it is underwater, it's utterly devastating.
Have spoken with my friends in the area, and all are thankfully ok (one is on her first trip back to the UK for five years though, and has no idea if she'll have a house to go back to when she is finally able to return).
 
Wanted to add my sincere condolences to all those affected. Words never seem adequate at times like these- they all sound hollow. I do think that disasters like this does also bring out the best in people -and that there are stories that make you realise how strong communities can be and how when faced with such adversity people can be brave and amazing.
 
MB - I'm a bit late getting to this thread, but my thoughts are with you and your family. I don't think any of us can really begin to imagine what those people and animals are going through right now, and I sincerely hope no more lives are lost, although from your last message it could get worse. Doesn't bear thinking about :(
 
I can't believe 5 months ago i was living in Toowoomba,it has been sickening to watch,
luckily the yard i was on, managed to get their horses to high ground, but are completely cut off.
