Ava is now 11 weeks old and still moulting out the baby fuzz. We have a lot of white appearing though which im surprised about!! It looks like she has a little star appearing and there are white flecks all through the new brown coat. She is 1/2 knab which i guess explains it but still not expected! I dont know if she is perhaps going to roan out?? Would be LOVELY if she did.

I reckon she will keep you guessing for years :)

I have a three year chestnut here (half appy) he was solid chestnut when he arrived at 6 months, now he has the classical appy sclera on eyes, mouth, nose, genitals, stripy hooves and white hairs appearing everywhere, it looks as if there are white spots coming on his bum too. So, if he is anything to go by, yes, the sclera develops over time.

You could still end up with a spotty if my little mare is anything to go by. She started off like yours with a light bay coat and a little snowcapping, she is, this year a bay roan extended blanket spot and i don't think she's finished yet. She gets lighter every year and spottier so I think she may well leopard out eventually.

Though i am no expert, my aunt runs the gradings in the UK for the KNN daughter society and we breed them at home (filly foal galloping in my picture is a full Danish Knab) it is exceptionally common for a foal to colour out, often taking years. If her feet have vertical stripes on them then this is an excellent gauge of whether she is definitely a solid, or in fact a suppressed spotted pattern.

The spotting on her lip is a characteristic but in that small quantity i don't think she'll end up being a leopard spot! It is likely that she will continue to show the white flecks through her coat as she changes. Unfortunately with a Spotty, you really never do know what you will get.

As an example, this is my aunts spotty pony foal from this year, out of a Black welsh B mare by a her own fewspot pony stallion of riding pony type. She was born Jet black, hence the name Jet! And then the changes have begun. She is for sale if anyone's interested - to make 12.2hh.

At 1 week

They are quite fascinating really. If she is half knab you can have her graded, depending on whether the outcross is allowed (TB's, Warmbloods ect are) and the parental knab is graded too. The grading this year is on the 9th September at Bishop Burton College if you fancied a look! :)

Hope this helps a little! I wouldn't worry. As long as there's no grey in either lines then she won't turn white!

She's definately not solid as she has a little lacy blanket on her bum so im expecting that she will colour out more on her bum but I will be interested to see if she gets more colouring on her body. She looks to just have black hooves though, is that not normal with a spotty?

Love the little foal, VERY cute!! Think i'd squish her though :D lol

Oh I missed that! I'm sorry! You should have brought her to the grading! Or just come along to see the others. Lovely getting most of the new ones in one place at the same time!

Black hooves are normal, as are striped, its just that 'striping, sclera and mottling of the muzzle, eyes or genetalia' are tell tales if a solid foal arrived, that it would colour out. It is likely that she will change more, and likely that she will 'roan' out a bit. Our 9 year old mare is still adding a few new spots to here blanket every year! And any solid left is now lighter and more mottled than ever! She may well stay as she is though re blanket.

What colour was the other Knab? Is it mum or dad? Genetics can often shed light!

UnaB am I right in thinking your filly is by Nobody's Harlequin? Check out a 2011 filly foal by him called Hey Mambo on their website. She was born bay with a little white frosting on backside and as a yearling looked quite different!

Justanotherneddy - lovely knabby I would be interested to know her breeding.

Another by Nobody's Harlequin of Tresaison Stud. Out of a TB mare called Rozel Bay(owned by Lesley at Tresaison). She was graded in 2007 with an overall score of 8 and won Best Mare and also Best in Show. She's owned by Willow Farm stud in Yorkshire She earned fantastic marks for her expressive trot, of which is pictured on the Tresaison website under Rozel Bay's Progeny.

She's bred 2 foals. A solid Chestnut Colt and this years near leopard filly Piper by an amazing stallion called Bastian. Lovely mare, loves going to parties, and wins everything in site. Has had a year or two off after fracturing her hind leg in the field but is now sound again in full work, and loving it!

This is this years filly - you can see her mums trot in her! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6b1HKyH4kE
