Is it just me or are the flies this year worse than ever? I've finally caved in and bought a fly rug (which I admit - as the biggest cynic alive, I previously thought they were just a gimmick!)

We have a new pony who's been eaten alive by the flies & had huge haematoma-like, fist sized lumps all over his belly last week! My other mare who is usually not affected has been bitten badly too...

Was looking forward to a break in the routine & planned to turn out 24/7 for the summer months but just don't think it's an option now...

How's everyone else getting on?
 
Humans seem to be reacting badly to horse flies

So far, neds have been fine. Dizz seems fairly immune and the other two have fly rugs.
 
I know completly driving me mad, went for a ride out on thursday and had to pass a stream the a puddle covered with flies before I had even go onto the roads

Contimplating buying a fly rug but think my horse would tear it to shreads!!!!
 
So far so good *crosses fingers* I've only found a couple of small (and I do mean small) lumps when stroking her. Wouldn't have found them otherwise as she still has a fair bit of foal fuzz
 
Bledy things! esp horse flies.

Mine havent really got any extreme bites, just small bumps here and there. but they have a field shelter and a large tree that provides lots of shade so if they need time out they know what to do. My homemade fly spray seems to be useless so ill buy some barrier biotech stuff - only for when im riding though. Izzy tends to go wappy when the horse flies wont leave us alone during a ride! dont blame her though!

Hot weather then rain then hot again is guaranteed to get those flies breeding! I find the worst thing here is the pine trees, they seem to attract every bitey thing known to man

I left my two in the garden one sunny day so they had shade from our big trees, but they got eaten alive. Big lumps like golf balls on the bellies and MoM, who is very thin skinned, was bitten all over her neck and shoulders. They infinitely prefer to be up in the open paddock where the wind keeps the flies away but there is no shade to speak off. I suppose they are used to temperatures in the high 30's/low 40's so a lack of shade doesn't bother them in the slightest when the highest we've managed this year so far is about 29C!!
