Love The Skin He's In Mud Gard Barrier Cream

Listed Active Ingredients
MSM, Tea Tree Oil and Rosemary Oil. Contains Limonene and Linalool.

Does anyone know what the carrier barrier cream is? Does it contain a petrochemical petroleum product?

Eg White Soft Paraffin
Light Liquid Paraffin Anhydrous

Or Lanolin

Does as anyone have a tub to hand to look?

Many thanks

I don't know about Mud Guard cream specifically but most mud fever products contain an olefin of one form or another because it is the only thing really water resistant to that degree. You could try to find something that is pure lanolin based (lanolin is not a petrochemical product, it is derived from sheep and other wool bearing species). But Lanolin is expensive - and has a very distinctive smell! - so tends to be mixed with paraffin wax which you are trying to avoid.

Another option might be to try to make up your own version of pig oil & sulphur using a vegetable oil carrier. But you would need to re-apply far more frequently as it just isn't a heavy enough oil to form a barrier. I'm not sure if anyone on here has tried that and could advise on the impact of reapplying sulphur so often.

There might be an old tub of mudguard up at the yard - I'll look later. It is helps at all I find it too sticky!

Pig oil and sulphur is just a mineral oil and sulphur powder. I dont need the sulphur so just use baby oil, which is also mineral oil. Seems to last about 5 days to a week and then needs washing off and doing again. One of the silcone based coat sprays might work, although I have no idea what you are trying to avoid and why, so silcone may be a no go!

I’m looking to find the carrier for love skin barrier to pin point an allergy. I know my horse IS allergic to this from last winter but I can’t find the full ingredients list anywhere online.? I’m sure it was in tub or I found it last year.

I’m not looking for an alternate barrier product.

My horse is definitely allergic to pig oil, human massage oil, baby oil, Vaseline,

My vet has given my flamazine cream for a cut which contains liquid paraffin I’m trying to work out if my horse is likely to be allergic to this.

Hugely grateful if anyone knows the base / carrier content of love the skin barrier cream as I can’t remember what it is that he reacted to last year.

I think he’s allergic to all paraffin/ petroleum oil based creams

I've got a tub, but it's not in the house. I'll look tomorrow for you.

ETA - linalool isn't an uncommon allergy in humans - not sure if it's the same with horses? Pretty sure it's in Vaseline and a couple of the other things you mentioned, too.

Thanks that would be great.

I agree re Linalool and limonene being perfumed additives that can be allergens.

But I dont think they are my horse's allergy.

Hopefully you can find the main carrier / base in love the skin barrier as I already know my horse is allergic to liquid paraffin, pig oil, baby oil etc and I think main ingredient of love skin would be what he’s allergic to as well.

Then why not just put that in the first post and save two people trying to help needlessly? I never understand why people cant put the pertinent points in a post

No need to be stroppy.

My opening post asked if anyone knew the base / carrier ingredient in love the skin barrier cream.

A simple clear question.

When two people unprompted suggested other barrier methods I added more detail to make it clear I was asking the base / carrier ingredient for love the skin barrier. Not for other barrier suggestions.

I added the additional detail to be helpful. My starting question was perfectly clear.

I'm afraid the tub doesn't have any further information on it - just the ingredients you have listed above (& sulphur).

Give the NAF helpline a ring and ask them. As others have identified it is all but impossible to find creams which don't contain a mineral based product. Is your horse allergic to lanolin as well? There are 100% lanolin based wound creams. What does your vet say about the allergy? Its an unusual one!

The answer from NAF is petroleum jelly

I think my horse’s allergy is narrowed to mineral oils and petroleum jelly.

Liquid paraffin may be ok
