Lots of cyclists out enjoying the sun today.
All were courteous when passing, but a special shout out to the group that:
  • Gave a warning “Hello” from a sensible distance
  • Asked if it was ok to pass *
  • Informed me there were 5 of them coming past
  • Lead cyclist instructed his mates to “keep talking” as they came past.
They of course got a very cheery Thank You 😃 from me.
* I don’t expect to be asked permission to pass me, but it’s nice of them to check

Also a shout out to the cyclist who commented “what a lovely horse” as he went past.
I think T’s head has just outgrown his F/S bridle 🤣
 
Not cyclists, but today I had to lead my spooky mare past some roadworks to get to the field. The workman was using the pneumatic drill as we approached and she'd already stopped in high alert mode several times as we got closer. He couldn't see us because of the van parked in the way. As soon as he saw us he laid down his drill and turned the generator down. He didn't start again until we were a long way down the road.

By the time I came back with the less-spooky-but-still-has-her-moments one he was levelling up the new tarmac.
 
Ah it's nice to hear a positive story! Not cyclists, but last week out riding the big twit, we could see a group of young teens ahead all wearing various character onesies with the hoods up. They saw us coming and I heard one of them tell the others to take the hoods down and to talk to the horse so "he knows we aren't monsters who are going to eat him". I thanked them profusely, and heard on of them say "I think he's scarier than my outfit" as we crab walked past, with eyes rolling and dragon snorts aplenty 😂
 
Our main bridleway is also a main cycleway into Cambridge, and obviously we get a lot generally. Most are pretty good but also the ponies get pretty solid pretty quick, plenty of trailer/cargo bikes about too. The only thing they’re not convinced about are roller skis 😅.
Obviously I do a lot of cycling too and was a bit sad that our club chairman came back from a combined safety meeting a bit jaded and he wouldn’t go again.
 
You and I both ride on that Public Bridleway. My horses' field is directly alongside it. Over the years we've met cyclists of all sorts (with trailer front and rear, tricycles, tandems, recumbents, hand cycles). Once we met a HPV (like a rocket!). We often meet unicyclists, roller skaters and in-line roller skiers too. Plus the single and double decker buses on the adjacent busway. Plus walkers, runners, dogs. Plus mobility scooters, wheelchairs. And sometimes the grass-cutting rideon tractor or a maintenance truck too. Oh and swans. Mustn't forget swans. We get them sometimes land on the path at the nature reserve end. All good fun!
 
T wasn’t quite so happy about the little piggies that have arrived near our route.
It was a bit of a struggle getting him past them, and to be fair I was dreading passing them homeward bound in case he decided speed was what he needed. But he was actually ok (on his toes but under control) as long as we crossed to the other side of the road.

You should put this on your local FB page, or if you can find the one the cyclists go on, that’s so nice of them.
 
I'm giving a shout out to the estate agent who paused from banging in his for sale post. Normally I'd be OK but just behind us was a blind bend and we can't get the council to reduce the speed limit down from 40 - so not the place to have a wobble.

Felt for the poor guy - ground is concrete.
 
Last week we had an encounter with a cyclist coming down a long steep hill and around the blind bend at absolutely silly speeds. Cue a feeble attempt by him to slow down as he nearly crashed into pony and I, causing her to spin around a few times. He just shouted sorry over his shoulder and kept going, didn't stop to check I wasn't on the floor!

Thankfully this week, we encountered some lovely cyclists, all of whom slowed down, said hello and checked if they were okay to pass, and pony didn't see too phased by her previous encounter.
 
I’m good to go with my polite chat to the riders as I check whether it’s ok to cycle past them, but I do still need better spiel as I chat to the horses.

‘Hello horse, hiya horse, cyclist coming past’ 🤣.

Do I sound like a horsey person? Err, no.
