Low calorie/sugar feed for coat shine?

Hi,

Could anyone recommend what to feed for coat shine in a good-doer, without adding too many calories or sugars? I've used Sunflower oil in the past, but more for keeping condition so I presume it is high in calories and don't think it would be suitable? :confused:

Tbh I've found the best is really good quality meadow hay or high fibre haylage plus pink powder to help them make best use of the nutrients (and a vitamin and min supp).

Anything else like linseed is very good for coat but is more fattening.
 
My good doer has weighed & soaked hay and on a night she has 2 x cups of Fast Fibre with 2 x handfuls of Happy Hoof and her coat just shines.
 
A balanced diet is the best way to ensure a shiny, healthy coat.

How ever any supplement which encourages shiny coats will be low in sugar but high in calories as they will be oil based
 
Agree with Amymay, a drop of linseed oil.

I have given my mare Baileys No 14 balancer this winter and she has the most shine on her coat in winter she has ever had. She is absolutely gleaming. That is a lo cal balancer too.

All she gets on top of this is a scoop of bran, and magnesium supplement because of the bran, plus pretty much ad lib hay.

She's a 16.3hh warmblood type who has a tendency of being overweight on fresh air even.
 
Linseed for me too, I give the micronised one to my haffy who is obviously a good doer but even a small quantity makes a difference and her skin is much less dry and itchy, and her feet seem less dry too.
 
My good doer is fed Bailey's No 14 (Lo-Cal) Balancer mixed with fast fibre. He was starting to look a little lacklustre in Autumn last year so started him on the balancer and he's never looked so good in winter...has a real shine to his coat, even where he's been clipped.
