Low sugar, cheap chaff for bulk feeding

Hi

My 27 year old mare has recently started being fed hay replacers as her teeth can no longer cope with chewing hay. She has soaked grass nuts and fast fibre and I've been bulking this out with a Dengie Hi Fi Molasses Free.

I wondered whether anyone can recommend a low sugar chaff that's more cost effective? I don't really need anything with goodness, just something to make the food last longer.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know if it works out any cheaper but there's a haylage you can get that designed to be easy chew for older horses that struggle with hay. Might take longer to chew than a chaff but still be doable.

Otherwise honey chop do a straight straw chaff, nothing added which goes a long way.

Honeychop plain chopped oat straw is great stuff, but IMHO may be a bit fibrous for an oldie with dental problems. I used to feed soaked Dodson and Horrell 16+ cubes to my dentally challenged skinny oldie, without any chaff or other bulking agents.

Thanks everyone. I tried the haylage and unfortunately she couldn't quite manage it (not entirely sure why as it wasn't far off chaff) which was a shame as it would definitely have been more cost effective.

Ill have a look at the honeychop for its sugar content, that's the only one I've not really looked at. I've found that just looking at cost and weight of bag for cost comparisons is misleading as the Dengie has pellets in which ends up making the bag weight more than a standard chaff bag but not last nearly as long.

I'd like to be able to bulk it to make it last longer overnight if possible, while she still can at least. She's not really skinny which is one good thing.

I bulk buy honeychop oat chop for my fatties, but it's the same texture as straw so might be too much for an oldie. Topchop zero is twice the price but finer.

They do other chops though and pricing is good.
