Hi

I have just had a potential new horse vetted and although he flew through the stages fine, his bloods came back that he had a very low white blood cell count. The vet thinks that its a post viral syndrome.

Does anyone have any info about this, as I can't find much on it (long term effects etc) or whether there are any products/supplements that would help? I know echinacea is good for immune system and iron is good for red blood cells, but not sure about white. I've emailed Global herbs to see if they have anything that would help.

Vet not being optimistic as not sure of how long it would take to recover etc but not being too pessimistic either so not sure what to do now, so any info would be grateful.

Thanks

Wouldn't have thought it would be anything to be concerned about. Get the bloods tested again in a fortnight to see what improvement there is. Providing of course that the owners are prepared to treat the horse.

There some really good things to help this. Equine America do one cant remeber what its called. Its just to help boost them after a virus thats all.

aloe vera is also a good general tonic. It might not be post viral though, there might be a continuing low grade infection requiring anti biotics.

I had a mare with this many years ago, she was always 'not quite right' (she was a racehorse in training). In the end it turned out she had a tumour and had to be PTS, not that I wish to scare you, but I would want to see real signs of improvement before committing to buy.

Our heavy cob has or had a low white blood count and he was due for an op. Vet asked us to put him on Propell Plus by Equine America I month prior to op. As count was too low for anasthetic. The blood count was finally good enough and he had the op thanks to Propell Plus.

Hi

Thanks, the vet said they had also been trialing Aloe Vera as a drink type tonic with some good results. I had the bloods tested because i know that the horse had a bad virus about a year ago so i do think its related to that, although vet says there is no sign of the virus, just the low white blood cells.

I've known the horse for about 6 months, and can't say i've noticed any difference in him during this time.

Will tread carefully although i had the full blood analysis (liver, kidney etc) so hope that would have shown up anything major.

Ooh thanks, will google it and see what it says about it. I only seem to find stuff for red cells, but not sure if that helps the white cells too

One of mine just had exactly the same recently. He's been rested for 6 weeks and put on Red Cell - rode him out for the first time last weekend and all I can say is he is now TURBO CHARGED!!!

Try these supplements pickle had a simular problem and all these worked

Blood Liquid
Red cell
Equisup

Then he just has a yearly blood check just to be on the safe side
