Many of you may want safer speeds in rural environments. There is a petition on the No 10 website calling for mandatory speed limits of 30mph, or lower where appropriate, on narrow lanes such as those typically found in rural areas. I wonder if you would be able to support it and give it publicity within your organisation. The address is http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/countrylanes/
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Thank you very much for that. My daughter has two youngsters that she tries to take onto a narrow lane in North Devon. Strangely its the local farmers who are the worst offenders. Shall gop and sign it now.

Petition signed!!! My best friend lost her horse in a car accident last year on a rural road that everyone had been campaigning to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph. They refused to do it and still refuse to do it even after the death of her horse and the death of her other friend that was riding him. ( his pics are in the PG along with my horse under the title "Sad day")

Theoretically its a very good idea! But realistically how is it going to be enforced other than a sign! Theres never gonna be a squad car on roads that small well extremmely rarely and if there is an accident on a road that small witnesses are going to be few and far between! A nice idea but i dont think it will go anywhere and if it does it wont change anything.

Had my mare out on the road for the first time in January, was a gorgeous day. Was lucky that no one rushed past us but we did have a lady who was coasting past, too busy looking at my friend and me on our horses, that she had swerved onto our side of the road, wing mirror clipped my mares back end!

Luckily its not fizzed on her but was enough to scare the poo out of me!

We have a 30 through our village - even when it is home time for our small infant school and there are mothers and children around hardly anyone abides by it

I agree in principle but think the money spent on changing all the road signs would be better spent on a proper TV campaign showing exactly what happens when a horse bounces off the bonnet of the average motor.

Signed!! I think we have to try to do what we can to encourage people to slow down on rural roads, it may not work with everyone but all we can do is try.

signed, government might not change things immediately but they use these types of petitions as a good indication of future ideas and strength of public opinion. I do feel that anyone who can't be bothered to sign shouldn't then complain next time somebody wizzes past and frightens their horse

DWI I agree with your sentiments exactly. Well put.

Mmmm, I'm not signing. Probably totally selfish but it would take twice a long to drive anywhere! I agree about giving more information to motorists about how to act around horses - many just don't have a clue! Those that go wizzing past horses are probably the same that would completely ignore 30 signs and go at 60 anyway!!
