My tb is currently in a single joint snaffle, which strength wise is fine as he's a bit of a donkey but I think the 'nutcracker' action is the reason for him constantly trying to open his mouth (having teeth done made no difference).
I've been advised to try a lozenge bit, thing is there's several and I'm not sure which to try.
I've come across- half moon, peanut, sweet iron, copper mix and titanium.
Anyone able to shed some light on them and give me a better idea of what would suit my horse? He's very easy to control, not a typical tb at all, I just want him to be more comfortable :)

My boy is currently in a loose ring sweet iron bit with copper lozenge, it really encourages him to accept the contact and is very settled in his mouth, he also hates the nutcracker action.

Tbh it's going to be trial and error for you, they are all different - could you borrow a friends to see if he likes the action before you buy?

ooh I will be interested in this! I have my boy in a single jointed loose ring snaffle. he works very nicely other than opening his mouth in an ugly strained fashion! his previous owner just had him in a flash which obviously did nothing to help the problem. His teeth have been checked so that isnt the problem, and I have my hands as soft as possible, so maybe a lozenge bit might help me too. Thanks for suggesting! x :)

Mine loathes the single jointed bits. He is in a copper lozenge eggbut snaffle - it took ages to find as I didn't want to pay silly money but got this for £30 somewhere, it might have been the Horses In Sport stand at an event. He loves it and goes very well in it. He's a 5yo TB exracer.

I had my previous tb in a happy mouth loose ring french ling with a roller lozenge, it really worked for him giving me a nice constant contact.
Same really with my connie, I have him on a sweet copper loose french link with a peanut lozenge, he works lovely in it. If I put him in a single joint his head carriage is awful and he really shakes his head around if I catch him. Think it bangs the roof of his mouth.

You can now get single joint snaffles that are shaped to sit over the tongue and don't have the nutcracker action of old. I've recently swapped all 3 of my TB's into them as they seemed to much prefer them to the lozenge bits I had, I believe because they have far less movement than the lozenge ones.

Unfortunately no one at the yard has a lozenge bit in the right size. Going to order a copper full cheek (also advised that the full cheek will help with turning - definitely needed when jumping!) And see how that goes. I just hate seeing him fighting to open his mouth, despite having the lightest hands he still looks uncomfortable :(
