Brand new to LR this season and feel a little lost! The majority of the outfits I've seen are the traditional double breasted jacket style but I was wondering if a single breasted ladies tweed jacket would suffice? I need a new jacket myself so hoping to kill two birds with one stone ;) I could wear it with a nice LR shirt with mandarin collar and matching hat etc. or would I just look totally wrong? I've been keeping a close eye on second hand matching outfits but they've never come up in the right size combination for the two of us...

as long as you and child match it doesnt matter if its a single breasted jacket. Maybe put a wanted ad on show gear facebook page

Thanks...I expect just local this year but hopefully some qualifiers next year so I may as well buy outfits that will last us, my daughter should get a couple of years out of hers. On Le Beau Cheval's website they have a few waistcoat outfits, would that be acceptable for qualifiers? I think it looks really smart.

plenty qualify for champs in waistcoats and smart neat cardigans

Single breasted tweed show jacket i think you need to be a bit careful with, they tend to look too 'riding' for leadrein if that makes sense, if it were a distinctly non show tweed it would be a bit different (for example some have bought 'fashion' jackets from the high street that compliment the child's jacket)

Yes, that's what I was worried about. I think I'll go for a waistcoat, I could always use that for some in hand stuff with a different shirt if I fancied it. Not really keen on the 'fashion' jackets...this sounds really snobby but I think they tend to look a bit amateur! I'm sure not all of them but with such a hectic life I'm definitely going to opt for matching off the same website, it's so much easier than having to shop around, lol.

You didnt say (I dont think) whether your pony was plaited or not. If your pony is a native then you need to dress in tweed and if not, you can go for the more formal look. Take a look at the Equinational Photos for top tips on turnout for all three of you! It is very important to get the look right as the whole 'look' is nearly important as how the pony goes. Oh and check out ebay and horse gossip for sale items as quality LR outfits can be picked up reasonably second hand and a good quality one will hold their price forever

We're all about the natives, my plaiting leaves a lot to be desired ;) Pony in question is a black shetland. I've got a lot of homework and shopping to get done, thanks for everyones advice.

Lol, luckily my two are ace and not like your 'typical' *****land!

Went to a local show today and had a nosey at the LR class, it was unreal - natives with jockeys wearing black jackets and leaders wearing everyday clothes, one even had a top with a huge diamante butterfly pattern! It was bizarre, I'd never dream of turning up in something that wasn't correct or I'd just stick to the fun classes.

Local shows are a law unto themselves! Anything goes there and there generally isn't a height limit either lol!

My lad isn't too bad when he can hear the electric click but the minute it stops he is through like a shot. He has sweet itch which doesn't help. But to fair to him he has won more than his fair share in the show ring in hand, lead rein and off lead rein so he can sometimes be forgiven!

This my black sheltie and my Granny Suit. Not the original skirt as the one that came with the jacket and hat looked stupid. It has a big band of the yellow tartan round the bottom and it looks so stupid. It also didn't sit right on me so I teamed it with my blue woolen one.

The kids jacket isn't matched with the Granny Suit but they complement each other well enough and stand up to the task in HOYS classes. I do have an issue with hats though. My head is very small so this hat I have rolled up jay cloths in the rim of to keep it tight enough. My last one had a joddy clip on the inside so it was elasticated tight on my head ... Oh the pain we put ourselves through for showing!

Ooh, I love it! Pony is very similar to one of mine :) See I'm confused about the tartan thing - I really wanted to incorporate it (my family's tartan is lovely) but didn't know how that would work with tweed? I was thinking I could match daughter's tie and bows to the tweed which is green/blue/purple/magenta, that sounds awful and very 'busy' but it's actually rather pretty. Then I'd wear a tartan band around my hat and maybe somewhere else but what jacket/trousers/skirt would I go for?! It's all so confusing. I'm tempted to get a 'ready made' set of outfits from pretty ponies or le beau cheval but on the other hand I want to stand out, in a good way ;), so maybe better to go for a more individual option?

If you are prepared to splash out why not ask one of the companies to make you a bespoke outfit with your tartan?

If not then tartan ribbons on the end of your child's hair and either as your hat band or shirt/blouse/scarf type thing would make it seen but not be ott.

Depending on how loud your tartan is you could always have it as your skirt/culottes/peddle pusher option.

Budget isn't MASSIVE unfortunately, I need to buy everything inc. hat/boots/gloves etc as well as new tack. Pony is currently in a cub saddle which wouldn't go down too well ;)

I was after a Thorn pad ideally but the Snape looks to be a little cheaper, is it nice? I do prefer the Thorn just based on the internet pics I've seen of the Snape...I had a Thorn up until recently and was really pleased with the quality and overall 'look'.

This is my Snape pad. It's the 15in with longer sides version on my seriously chunky full up 42" mare. They are very easy to ride in. I have never tried a thorn pad though many do say they like them.

Is that your son? I love your outfit but his tweed looks cheap (sorry), perhaps try to invest in a nice tweed for him that matches the green of your tweed and it will all tie in together more. I like your look though! Might be inclined to try to dye your hat to match your suit more or find a blue hat and move the tweed ribbon over onto it???

Me? Good god no! That's not my son! I am the very last person on the planet that is ever going to have kids! Blergh! Lol! No he is my nephew. His jacket has been worn by many kids over the years and is actually a Mears jacket surprisingly. My hat is the same colour as the jacket its just the picture that makes it look odd. Thankfully he is out of lead rein classes as I hate doing them! I just get subjected to them! I'd rather prance about sideways on my stupid grey TB than don the Granny Suit! Though I have to say the shoes are THEE most comfey things on the planet! I have no plans on doing any more lead rein any time soon - fear not!
