Several well known and respected people of the mainstream equine industry, such as Craig Johnson (reining), Leon Harrel (cutting), Walter Zettl (dressage), Louis Lucio (dressage), Luca Moneta (Jumping), and Karen and David O'Connor (eventing, dressage), have utilized similar methods in their own horsemanship and voiced support for Parelli's methods.
They're obviously, not Horse and Hound forum members.
I had collecting ring tickets at olympia and he certainly had a very unusual way of warming up. He had his horse on a lunge line and just let it stand and paw the ground and made it take a few steps every now and again before letting it stand and look around. May not sound that unusual but it went on for a good 40 minutes in preparation for a class, all this while others were trying to jump and work their horses in the conventional way. He did eventually get on the horse but only for about 10 - 15 mins before his round, meanwhile most of the class had been warming up mounted for an hour before their round. Seemed very strange to me, but it obviously works for him!
Actually makes senses if he had a really spooky or sensitive horse, gave it time to really settle. Most people apply a similar approach albeit mounted on young/sharp etc horses. I take my youngster around for a wander in new places, light contact and forward but don't pick up and start working till he has relaxed.
Luca, has taken on some challenging horses, if he has done what Harlequinwalk says he's done to warm up, it's not unusual with some types of horses in Natural Horsemanship circles, to do this.
Each to his own I say. We all do what works for our horses and us whatever that is.
At the end of the day I saw someone having fun on a happy looking horse that gave everything a good try. Can't knock that.
I loved the fact he is competing at a top level with no gadgets whatsover and his horses tried their hearts out for him.I know some people may not like his unconventional approach, but hey ho it worked, and Luca did a lot better than many of the riders at Olympia.
OP - he did not 'credit all his success to Linda Perelli'!! Statements like that are the reason mainstreem riders are unwilling to entertain Perelli methods!!
He uses some perelli methods and ethology to help his horses to become the best they can be - he does not blindly follow what has sadly become the 'cult' of Perelli.
I have nothing against the training methods used by Pat and Linda and have used many of their ideas with great success, but you have to have your own mind and adapt to different horses and different situations - which is why Luca is so sucessful - he does not blindly follow one way, he adapts different methods for each horse/problem, with ethology at the heart of everything he does.
I reckon that he has a decent dose of horsemanship himself and so can apply some of the methodology in a helpful way. Something that we don't always see from practitioners and followers.
It's hard to compare him with the vast majority of Parelli followers though as he is something of an oddity among them, given that he not only rides his horses but jumps them too....
Did he beat the horse around the head in the collecting ring or clunk it's jawbone with the lead rope clip? Linda could give him some tips there!
Pretty sure Carl Hester was working with/ in partnership with/ whatever you want to call it the Parellis too. A few years ago now but I can specifically remember the advert, as Craig Johnson was mentioned in it too, because it was a big picture of Carl with Pat.
