Any thoughts on this rug please. I saw one in use today on a high withered horse who was recovering from fistulous withers.

My old boy has no top line now and at the end of last winter had the start of a wither rub, despite me using clean bibs under his amigo light weight rugs. The design of the lucanta stratus is impressive and might alleviate my problems.

Thanks.

My oldie gets a bit of a wither rub if I am not careful and I was about to start looking at getting him a new rug so took a look and the idea seems great, one problem is all the bigger sizes are out of stock so it may be a bit of a wait.

The rug i saw this morning had large sponge like pads sewn into the side of the rug which sat either side of the withers effectively filling the area where muscle has wasted. The top of the rug was clear by 2 inches or so of the actual wither.

If it helps, my big fella arrive with fistulous withers and I put together a homemade contraption that worked brilliantly.

I took a wintec foam rear riser, cut off the front bit (discarded) and sewed the back bit onto one of those satin lined shoulder guards.

Withers healed. Voila

AA I'd not necessarily recommend PE rugs in this situation, IMO the heavier weight rugs become very heavy when wet and they don't have wither pads.
Try the Weatherbeeta Comfitec Plus rugs (NOT the Genero, Classic or Essential ones) - they all have a Memory Foam wither pad either side of the wither to raise the rug off the wither and prevent rubbing, the fabric also doesn't absorb water therefore remains light even when wet.

I think that you are relatively local to me and I have several Comfitec rugs you could take a look at (I don't want to sell, but you're welcome to look at them or try if it would help your old boy? Mine are 6ft 6s or 6ft 9s)

Thank you so much. I couldn't put a heavy weight rug on him, he gets very hot. I only use 50g to 100g liners with rain sheet over top. He might struggle to rise from a roll or sleep in a heavy rug too.

I haven’t used one but I think Weatherbeeta do a rug with foam at the withers. I think it is the Comfitec range.

Thanks, more info than I knew.

Ah bless him. WB do a 100g rug with detatchable 200g liner that has the memory foam wither pad - my cob only has the 100g on as 300g is too much for him too!
Perhaps a home made wither pad (the way the WB ones work is a shaped pad either side of the wither to hold the rug up off the wither itself.) ?

Yes, the WB comfitec premier and WB comfitec plus have the wither pads IIRC.

Here's a pic. Would they be big enough for your needs?

Hmmm.. difficult to say without a feel. Look at the wither on him. No top line at all, no fat just bone, and he has white marks from rug pressure (amigo) . This was last year and he is in similar condition today going into his 26th winter. I am glad I found this picture, my dock spraying has worked, they have all gone this year !51781259_1839071359538197_4014598097274404864_n.jpg

He looks in amazing condition for a big 26yo.
Similar to my chap who we lost younger but the Cushings just progressed too quickly.
Honestly, try the foam padding

Thank you, he is a lovely horse, still has all the presence he had in the show ring and still bouncing around if the weather isn't too hot for him. I do have a friend who is clever with a sewing needle. I am thinking of wrapping two car washing sponges in silky material and attaching them either side of the wither ?

You have reminded me.
I have seen a rectangle of very thick foam with a hole cut for the withers put inside a pillowcase and stitched in place. Perhaps you could stitch it to an under sheet for easy washing?
Would that work?

Very probably, I have a 50g amigo under rug/layer. It washes at 30 degrees and dries on the line in minutes. It also moves with the horse so doesn't catch his hip bones or top of croup/tail head.

Not much work to make it and therefore worth a try for a few days I would have thought. Hope it cures the problem.

Could you stitch pads to a bib, AA, so you can wash it and use it with any rug? I'd want them deeper and further apart than that WB above.

.

Broken record time, I’ll shut up now.
This holds the rug up off the wither and is solid enough not to compress. Put it on a shoulder saver and use under any rug without washing considerations too

If you decide not to do it yourself, my stable rug is a Rambo with the big dart, like a split front of the rug, forget the name, but that has huge wither pads.

I did find the actual fit a bot of a disappointment, as it does slip back a bit despite the contoured neck arrangement, but the withers are well protected. I can only presume the outdoor versions have the same, and I don't think you can beat Rambo for waterproofness and being lightweight.

I’ve seen wither pads made from big car sponges, or even cut up pool noodle. These things sewn into a bib might be helpful? You can even sew satin over the top to further prevent rubs
