Ah, thanks for that. I couldn't remember the name of thevTetris rugs. I bought the Rambo Optimo which has wither relief pads. I'm not a fan of Premier Equine rugs because they are so heavy even when they are dry.
Coincidentally, my horse was lame after his power cooler twisted overnight and pulled tightly over his withers and shoulders. He'll never be left overnight in it again. The pressure from badly fitting rugs is considerable.
 
Haven't bought anything as yet. Have washed and fabric conditioned all his vests, stretchy and silky ones. It is still mild so he is only wearing a rain sheet at night with a vest and so far so good.

I think I will try to put padding inside his Amigo rain sheets and use liners. I have joined the facebook page of second hand rugs though.

I spent £7.50 on a new silky bib, and 89p x 2 on huge sponges from Halfords. My lovely friend then stitched velcro on to the bib, covered the sponges in cotton cloth and stitched velcro on to the cloth. I can simply take the sponges off and wash the bib.

Excuse the messy odd clip, I leave a strip down his spine to help prevent rubbing. He is retired so looks don't matter, it is all down to comfort for him.

I would love a new rug for my precious boy but cash is tight so it is make do and mend. The main thing that put me off the PE rugs was the number of people that mentioned how heavy they are. I am doing everything I can do to keep weight and pressure off him. The Amigo rain sheet and liners work really well for him.

I've got the Lucanta Stratus and a Weatherbeeta comfitec dynamic. Both are 1200D and the exact same fabric and pattern. However, my Weatherbeeta leaked and was not totally Waterproof. This was brand new, during its first rain. I re-proofed it, but I haven't put it to the test yet.

They both have wither padding, but I feel like the Premier Equine rug sits up higher and more off of the withers. Both are better about less pressure in comparison to my Rambo or Amigo (not the Wug version) rugs.

I got the Lucanta on sale during black Friday. A 100g with 250g liner. Couldn't beat the price! It will probably go on 20% off I imagine as they rotate their sales daily and I've seen it come up before. I don't find it much heavier when wet, but again, it's only 100g.

The neck cover is quite roomy and looks a bit foolish, but accomplishes its task. I also had to order a size smaller. My horse normally fits a 6'3 in Rambo, Amigo, and Weatherbeeta, but fits in a 6'0 with the PE rug. Runs quite large.

The Wug also works ok for lessening either pressure, but IME isn't terribly suitable for a horse with a large shoulder/chest/neck. My horse barely gets away with fitting in a Rambo Wug. But he's a P.R.E. So a less upright and thick built horse would suit it fine. The WB is larger around the base of the neck. It doesn't come up as high and snug as the PE. So water did also come in there. Surprising because as I said, my guy is more full figured.

I'm not keen on my Weatherbeeta experience re the water proofing, but that doesn't seem to be the norm. That aside, I feel as though the rugs are fairly similar but I'd buy the PE again over the WB.

I have seen someone make a homemade device for wither relief too. So that might be worth a try to use under your existing rugs.
 
My mare developed a whither rub which got infected. I had a Weatherbeta comfitech with the whither relief anyway, so used that on her and it worked. However, it’s a medium weight and needed a lighter version for her, so I bought the PE Lucanta, 100g and that has a much bigger padded area and it’s even better for whither relief.

However, they are both quite heavy rugs, esp the 100g PE, and although she’s fully clipped she gets warm in it. The big padding round the neck and whither area must also be hot. It’s ok at this time of year, but it’s not my idea of a lightweight!

My horseware rugs seem much lighter.
 
I think a homemade device would be very handy indeed and you could use it under all their rugs. I’m going to copy IHW!
IHW - how did you attach the riser to the bib? Super glue?
