Has anyone been on one of the Lucinda Green XC-the-safe-way clinics? If so, what did you think?

I'm hoping to do one of the 2 day clinics and would be grateful for views.

Anyone else thinking about doing one this year?

I'm due to go on a Lucinda Green clinic at Hilltop XC at the end of April, I would never have considered going on it but I saw a video of her in action at Hilltop and it all seemed very relaxed and she seemed lovely which convinced me to book on the course, I have a very green 4 year old so was incredibly worried about making an idiot of myself! The courses at Hilltop only have 6 people at a time in them, also you can choose clinics with different levels of ability which is extremely helpful with my green horse!

I went on one a couple of years a go and learnt a HUGE amount! She is excellent, really really gets you thinking about what you are doing, is fantastically encouraging, and had me umping things I never thought I'd be able to at the beginning of the session :)

My mare is only 4 and very green which makes me really nervous to take her in case all the other horses are perfectly behaved and I have a bouncy 4 year old!

I have booked her in the novice 2'3 class so hopefully everybody else will be novice and it will all be okay!

My friend and I are probably going to do the one day one near us this year. I did a couple of hours with her and it was fab last year.

I did a 2 day course last yr. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I had to swap horses between the 2 days as one went lame, and I took my (never been over 2'3") rising 5yr old & we did a couple of 3' jumps and some huge ditches. Just make sure you are really honest on your form & you'll be put in the right group.

Have a great time & take someone along to video/snap you going over everything.

i went on one years ago, and although i had a good time, i wouldn't do one again, my group although all similar on paper was very different in terms of confidence, and i got a distinct impression she didn't like my horse, so i just felt i was almost just going through the motions & not getting quite as much feedback as those people with more problems, her toothpaste way of explaining things has stuck with me forever though, & i think had it have been a 1:1 i'd have got alot out of it, but generally i don't like clinics or group lessons, i've been to too many where i've just been in totally the wrong group despite the essays written on the forms!!

I went to Hilltop last year and it was fab. She was really good and down to earth and no horse is too naughty or rider too numpty. Just for once horse and I were on the money but there were a couple of nervous riders and a very green rude youngster, none of which fazed her.

I've been to about 4 or 5 of her 2 day clinics at MKEC. I've used them both as a learning experience and a start of season refresher. I can not recommend her highly enough.
However she will not suffer fools and although endlessly patient with young horses and inexperienced riders, she does get frustrated with those that don't listen or think they know their their horses/situation better. She has always summed up both me and 2 different horses of mine very quickly.
I agree it is hard to always be in the right group and last time I was put in one that did not want to do as much as I would have liked to have done. But the first day is nothing to do with the size of the fences, it is all about getting the horse to think for itself, within a safe and controlled environment and the 2nd day is about putting it into practice and she is always more than happy to have people go and jump bigger fences if they wish to.
At all times she is open to any questions you wish to ask and I have always come away brimming in confidence in my horse and myself.
So if you and your horse lack confidence in yourselves or each other, or you just want to understand how to go xc as safely as possible, give her a go.

Thanks everyone, that's really useful!

I'm booked into the clinic at Littleton Manor, which isn't a venue I know at all, so I'm hoping they have jumps of a suitable size (i.e. not too big!!). Anyone familiar with it?

I tried to be very honest about ability - but also my competition hopes - so I expect I'll be put into a group that will push me.

Am very nervous - not sure why. Maybe because she's a 'name'?

LMEQ is lovely, I go for lessons there a lot with my XC instructor..... it has everything from small baby horse stuff to pretty chunky, so don't worry.... also, the layout is good - lots of different fences but all really within a reasonable walk so nice and manageable as a clinic venue.

Ive been to 2 clinics - had a great time at both. Although I was pretty nervous as was unsure I would be 'good' enough. The second one I went to was on my dressage horse who I jumped for fun so not strictly an eventer as such but it taught us both so much that I then went and did some unaffiliated events and eventer trials. It also improved our dressage as he was very spooky and all her exercises made me think more forwards and keep him focused. So a well worth while experience ! Enjoy it!

you will be fine, LMEQ is awesome, and LG does a good clinic, and is very down to earth, ask as many questions as you want - she didn't seem to mind when I did! and if you don't understand, say! :) enjoy

I did one last year. Learnt loads about myself and my horse but there was one chap there who I thought she knew. He was obviously a professional riding a horse for an owner who was also there and the horse was a baby eventer in the making rather than someones prized nag like mine and he seemed to get much more attention/advice than the rest of us! There were 3 groups of different levels but the height of the jumps didnt vary much between all 3.

Give it a go, you'll enjoy it!

My horse broke his neck in a rotational fall at one of her XC the Safe Way clinics. He had competed at novice and I had competed up to CIC**. Whilst I cannot recommend her clinics as a result, if you do go just bear this in mind if you're asked to do anything you're not comfortable with. She won't be the one picking up the pieces if it goes wrong.

goodness how awful. have to say, i hero worship lucinda but wouldn't take another to one of her clinics. the sessions ask a lot of the horse and last for far too long and as a result horses end up making mistakes and frightening themselves. it just isn't reasonable to expect a horse to maintain a high level of concentration for two hours. i saw the confidence of one combination left in tatters towards the end of one of her clinics and by that point it was too late to do anything about it.

How awful!!!! I am so, so sorry to hear about your horse. I will definitely bear this in mind when it comes to overfacing ourselves, and stick to my guns. However, one of my big worries is whether LMEQ has jumps of a suitable height, not having been there before.

This is the website for the venue:

Is it suitable as a training venue for someone aiming for our first BE90 this year? We've done unaffiliated BE90 XC and gone clear, and the horse did a couple with a previous owner.

I'm doing the 2 day clinic, as I thought the 1 day might be a bit 'full on' for the horse, doing both the pole work and XC in the same session. What does everyone else think? Is the two day better or just as hard work for the horse? My boy is reasonably fit, and a real energiser bunny, but because of that I'd worry about injury because he won't tell me when he's tired.

Will go in with an open mind. Thanks everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it!

So pleased to hear that as I have a clinic at hilltop with her at end of April with my 4 year old who hasn't attempted XC yet so I didn't know what to expect, I'm planning on hiring Hilltop before end of April so my mare gets used to the surrounding before she gets in with a group of horses.

I have done a one day and a 2 day both at Ascott under wychwood - both were pretty good but Value for money in my opinion was on a 2 day - i felt last years one day was rushed through - I do think she is fab and really helped get me going .
Apparently this year you get a personalised DVD with it .

Glad to hear a few folk saying they are thinking of taking their youngsters. I'm hoping to take my 4yo to Hilltop in Sept. He won't be ready by April but hopefully with a few months work under his belt, we might be ready to face being out in public by the Autumn!! I took my last horse as a 4 or 5 year old (I forget which because it was about 15 odd years ago now!) and thought Lucinda was excellent - loads of fun and very happy to take everyone on their merits.

ps I especially like the sound of getting a personalised DVD - it's not always comfortable viewing yourself but SO helpful to see your flaws from the outside in!!

you will definitely be fine at Littleton for aiming at BE90, I am based here, there is tons to jump and the ground is sandy soil so even with all this rain we are ok to be open as the ground drains fast and doesn't get deep. Hopefully see you at the clinic!
