Went for a ride this afternoon (got very wet!!!) and tried a different girth as the other was a little too long, it's a leather wembley shaped girth with elastic at one end. After coming back from the ride and trying to warm my hands in his elbows I noticed there was quite a large lump behind where the thinnest part of the girth sat, the lump was much more pronounce on the elastic side than the other. It didn't seem to be causing him any discomfort, is this just where the girth has been pinching him? I'm obviously not going to use it again and will go back to my other wider one. Have checked on him again this evening, lump has completely gone down on non elastic side and greatly reduced on the elastic side. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have used this girth on him before and nothing appeared, he was also clean as was the girth, can girth galls just happen or is there something I should be doing to help? Was looking at getting a sheepskin girth cover anyway, would this help? Thanks

Absolutely exactly the same situation happened to my mare. It took a week to go down and I was mortified. It never seemed to cause her any pain at all. I put a Prolite girth sleeve on it from then on and that cured the problem. I didn't ride until it had gone.

It had gone down quite a bit when I last checked but will keep an eye on it and leave him well alone until its completely gone, felt so sorry for him, my girth did go up an extra hole today so not sure if I've over tightened it or something! Having done a bit of research about girth galls after the suggestion but its not at all scabby or rubbed just a raised lump behind the thinner part of the girth. I had been looking at the girth sleeves for a while anyway so will definitely try that. He did seem a bit odd to ride today but put it down to the torrential rain and change of feed, he was obviously trying to tell me he was uncomfortable!!

Mine went to roll when I was on her and I couldn't understand what was up with her until I got home and saw it. It was exactly as you describe no rub or broken skin just a lump.
