I have recently found a lump on my horses back not directly on his spine, just where the back of his saddle would sit. He is not in any pain with pressure put on it, just grumpier than usual with his saddle. It is about as big as a 50p coin and bumpy to touch? Someone has said it could be collagen lumps?

Is it like a large bug bite? My mare gets them when she sweats (under saddle area generally), vet has said it is nothing to worry about and will eventually disappear! She has had a little cluster by her spine for about a year now, causes no discomfort and even clipped over them this winter! So I dont worry about them.

If they are causing him to get moody and are obviosuly sensitive then maybe ask your vet! :)

Well he isnt bothered at all if i put pressure on it. he is a grump generally anyway but just want to no what it could be in case i make it worse. the hair is still there over it jus raised so yeh like a bite just an odd shape!!

we've just bought a new mare with a cluster of small lumps, like fly bites, on her back as baker190 has described. Her old owners said they were caused by sweating too and that they would disappear eventually.
Baker 190 has your horse had the same bumps for a year? I was worried as our mares appeared to not be getting any better but we have only had her a few days, do you treat them with anything?

Sometimes, if its just one lump and not sore, it can be something to do with an ingrown hair. I saw one once and the vet cut it and it was full of hair. I'd get your vet to have a look at it the next time hes there as long as its not causing any trouble at the moment.
