Today when grooming, I found a small lump about the size of a pea just behind withers and down to one side. I've never noticed this before.
Horse hasn't been ridden for nearly 3 months. My YO says just to monitor it and that it feels like a small cyst. There is no head to it.
Anyone know what it could be?

Funnily enough picking up wormer tomorrow! She was wormed with Strongid P in May, and worm count done in Sept, no problem. Picking up Equitape tomorrow, have been waiting for it to come in for almost a month!

Vet told me that this was a particular parasite that can;t survive in horses, dies and calcifies. Saddle fitter said this was nonsense and it was a presssure reaction....so who knows? Went away after a couple of months

My horse had something like this, wasn't causing any problem. I did have the vet and saddle fitter look at it when they were there for something else. Vet said leave it alone, but thought it might be saddle related. Saddle fitter said was caused by encysted worms being killed off by wormer and leaving scar tissue behind. He said to cause a lump like that the saddle would have had to have a lump like a small stone inside. to cause enouogh pressure for a reaction like it. Not sure I beleived either explanation but I left it alone, it went away after 3-4 months

My mare had a small lump on her back which didnt go away. My vet took a look at it and said that it was more than likely an ingrowing hair (cant remember the proper name for it

). As it was under the saddle and starting to rub slightly, the vet injected it with steriods and after a few weeks it totally disapeared.

My filly has just had a lump removed just like this from her back, it was right in the middle where the back of the saddle would sit so had to go. Was advised by vet it was probably as cyst but after removal which was easy and done under sedation, the histology report showed it was a benign tumour of the skin cell and would have likely grown much bigger and possibly ruptured if left. Think this was quite unusual though but if its in a position which may interfere then I would get the vet to check as a precaution. Good luck

did you find out what the pea size lump was? has it gone now?

my horse had one come up 2 weeks ago on his forehead, took him to vets vet said most probably blocked sebaceous cyst, to soak with salt water everyday.

As of yet it hasnt shrunk, hoping it will go away soon
