My 16 year old gelding has recently developed a quite firm egg-sized lump on his belly. He doesn't mind me pressing it - but he is doing a lot of tail-flicking and kicking. Any thoughts anyone? I live in rural Crete - there are no horse vets around here, the local vets are very reluctant to get involved. So far this winter I have dealt with an infected foot - many thanks to my wonderful farrier - and a swollen scrotum - my own trial and error seems to have sorted that out!

You really do need to find out what it is, and there are all kinds of things that a lump could be.

Do you know what an abdominal hernia looks like in a horse? That would be one of my suggestions, and if it is that, then you need to know whether the intestines have moved into the hernia, causing your horse to show some symptoms of colic (tail swishing and kicking). If it is that, then you need to get veterinary help sooner rather than later to avoid the risk of the intestines becoming strangulated and creating a total emergency.

Of course, I'm sure there are lots of other more benign things it could be too.

Perhaps if you can pop a photo of the lump on here it'll make it easier for people to suggest what it is?

I believe their are a number of online vet services though I have not used any...

(these would of course charge)

take a look on line or maybe a vet that you previously used over here?

I think you would need to provide full video and descriptive information to get an approimate diagnosis

After that not too sure...
