Lump on bum - abscess?

Posted this in NL but then realised it should have been here!

Further to my "horse not right" thread, he seemed better yesterday. I gave him the day off as I clipped, and did find a pretty huge, hard lump on his bum (about twice the size of a 50p piece - the old ones!) but he wasn't bothered by my fiddling with it.

Today it has changed its consistency a bit, and is not so much one big bump, as a load of weird contours or smaller lumps under the skin. However today it IS tender - I had a fiddle with it and nearly got my head kicked in (not kicking out at me, at himself) and he's just very uncomfortable, stamping kicking and tail swishing.

Rang vet and she said it sounds like abscess or haematoma, neither of which she thinks is likely for the location (it's right at the top of his rump, not far back from his hip bone). I can't find any head or entry point on it. He's also field boss so never gets bites or kicks. He's also rugged. She advised me to put a hot flannel on it, bute him and turn him out, which I have done. She said if it doesn't improve she'll come and scan it. She doesn't want to lance it as she feels it won't drain because of where it is, and we'll just make it worse by creating a hole for more crap to get into, direct into the muscle. She said to give him two more bute this evening, which I will do, and I will also poultice it to see if anything happens with it.

He's eating up and pooing fine, and is very bright in himself apart from this irritation (went hooning off when I turned him out, with lots of bucking which I didn't know were discomfort or just high jinks!). I haven't ridden him, and won't, because I don't think it's fair and because I don't want to get bucked off, it's making his back end very active!

Sorry it's long! But anyone had anything similar?? I did know of one horse who had a huge abscess in the same place, and he got very ill and poor from it. But that was enormous.

i would say it was a hyeamtomea due to they are usually quite soft and big. like you say it is a weird place are you sure he has not got a allergy to something. or maybe been biten?

A new horse has been turned out in his field lately...although he's not really new, he was in with him until mid September, then taken out. Dyl is field boss and never, ever comes in with bites or kicks (touches wood). However he did have a scab at the top of his tail, gawd knows where that came from.

As for an allergy, I don't know, nothing in his feed or routine has changed at all lately. Although I think this may have been brewing a while, he's been itchy for quite a bit now. His field is big and wild, so there's always a chance he's eaten something new in there that's disagreed with him.

Think I need to get the vet out to scan it...she said that's what she would do, so she can at least see what's inside it...
