Lump on Horse's back?!?!?

Found it this evening, right side of his back (not particularly near the spine) it is flat but raised a few mm above the rest of him. It is hard to touch and he does not react to it. He has spent almost 6 months on box rest due to a road accident we had (he had an op on his leg due to this) I have recently sat on him twice over the last week as the vet told me to. He also had a lightweight saddle on for a bit yesterday. I don't think it has anything to do with this. I can not call the vet out till next week as we simply can't afford emergency call out fees (so will wait till I can book an appointment!) other wise he is totally him self. Just wandering what it is? Ideas? I think it may be a lump of fat but I am not 100%! It is about the same size as the space between your index finger and thumb when you put the tips togther (like an "ok" gesture)

Don't think you read it very clearly. He has been on box rest for 6 months. He had a saddle placed on his back yesterday (I wasn't mounted and the girth was only loose, not tight) it was on for a marginal amount of time :)
 
Yes I did read it clearly, I had a mare that got a saddle sore from a badly fitting stable rug, if the skin is thin, it can and does rub very quickly and she had what they call a saddle sore.
 
Surely theses would be sore to touch? He didn't seen to notice when I was toughing it, he is a native breed too, tough skinned and his stable rug hasn't done this before (its taken off several times a day)
 
No they don't notice, I was one that found it, after awhile it came loose, what I did when I put the saddle on was to use a very thick wool nummah and it healed very fast
 
Sounds like a collagen lump, my mare has them and they are nothing to worry about unless they are rubbing. They tend to disappear over time and are thought to be caused initially by insect bites.
 
I wouldn't pay a vet to look at it, from what you describe there will be nothing they can do about it anyway. It sounds like an insect bite to me.
 
My old boy used to get lumps in the saddle area when he was a youngster, no rhyme or reason to them, and caused no problems. Vet had no solution just told me to keep everything clean, so always clean rugs and saddlecloths. He had them for about a year then they went and haven't been seen again for the last 20 years!
 
I know they were eradicated, but there were two types, only one type were eradicated I believe.

My horse has got a lump that reminds me very much of the old warble fly lumps back in the old days. Just an off chance, may be worth bearing in mind.

Both species were eradicated I think you'll find, the second species Hypoderma lineatum is mostly in the USA so was never much of a threat to the UK, the effective widespread treatment starting years ago has eradicated the warble since about 1990. When we trained (before 1990) we were taught to avoid the hides that were affected by warble now we never seen any warble holes in hides. It's VERY unlikely to be a warble fly hole of either species.
 
Sounds exactly like collagen lumps. My last horse used to get them. The vet will give you a steroid cream which should reduce it. I also found keeping the area cool made a big difference whilst I was treating it.
 
Most likely a reaction. Prod it and squeeze it and see if you get a reaction. If you do not then carry on as normal. My horse gets these now I wash off after riding with anti bacterial wash and clip the saddle patch off and it has stopped it. Mine was most likely bacterial.
