Hi all

Hoping someone can advise please? Mare has developed a lump on chest. Some info below:
Sometimes hard/soft although mostly soft.
Normal temp/eating/drinking/toilet
Goes up and down in size/looks to spread out at times

Thanks

If you haven't stuck a needle in it to try to drain it or picked at it, then there's an obvious insect bite type hole on those photos.
.

It looks like the sort of thing g my Clydesdale mare got when she had her flu & tet vaccine I her chest. If it's not possible, could it be a kick?
Thanks for this. We actually noticed it the day of her vaccines - just before the vet arrived to give them. She’s new to current yard so still in isolation. It’s not impossible there’s been a kick though!

I did notice that but wasn’t sure it would swell that much. Do you think it’s infected or could offer any advice to reduce swelling? Thanks so much

Could be a large blood blister from a knock, or kick so the hanging part is where blood had moved to the lowest point

Haematoma possibly, would need to be drained if it is

My mare used to get haematomas like this from occasionally catching herself with a shoe when getting up from lying down. Some were impressively large. She never ever had them drained. Her body absorbed them in it's own good time and within up to two weeks they had gone. She also had a couple over the years in response to booster vacs, again, never drained. I believe draining is a last resort as usually reabsorbed no problem.

Thank you so much. She’s barefoot at moment but could still easily give herself a knock getting up ☺️

I would speak to your vet. Looks most likely a haematoma but could it be pigeon fever? It's a bacterial cause and doesn't always cause a high fever

I've known swellings like this from a kick. It looks like the lower swelling is fluid filling from the higher lump which looks a bit infected. Did the vet look at it when doing vaccinations, if not I'd get it looked at if it doesn't start going down soon.
